“What do you think you’re doing, Alia we’re not done here!” He screamed at me for the second time today
“Just stop Yacoub I already told you, you have no right to see our kids right now.”
“I am their father. I have every right to see them. Just because we got a divorce doesn’t mean you can forbid me from seeing them.”
“Don’t you realize how hard this is for them? They can’t process the idea right now. I think it’s best if you give them a couple weeks. I’ll call you when they’re ready, I promise.”
“Whatever. Just be sure to keep this promise, unlike all the other ones you broke.” He grumbled. He shut his car door loudly, and sped off the street as fast as the wind.
After our divorce, Yacoub went from being the gentle caring husband he once was to the biggest jerk. He blames me for everything and won’t even look at me the same. Now he comes waltzing into my life yet again, demanding to see our twins, Amara and Nuh. I’m just so sick of this. The judge said he would be able to see them when they’re ready! But Yacoub being the stubborn guy he is would refuse to listen.
I went inside my house and unwrapped my hijab off my head. I still had about two hours before the kids we’re getting out of kindergarten. Being a mother at twenty-four was hard but I didn’t regret one second of it. Today was the day I was going to find out if I got the job I’ve been yearning for. I applied to become a secretary for the Vice president of a software company. The job was temporary but I really needed it because I was living off my savings. I just prayed to God I would get this job, the competition was mind blowing. I needed this job, it paid a good salary for my family and I didn’t want to depend on my parents for money.
I checked the time and saw that I had about an hour and a half to go pick up the kids. I decided on making macaroni and cheese with vegetables since Nuh was craving it since yesterday. While cooking, I got a call from the software company, informing me that I was the new secretary. I was so excited! I couldn’t believe I actually got the job! I couldn’t wait to tell everyone, especially my kids. I put on my hijab and exited the house, making my way toward the school.
When I arrived at the school, I saw a crowd of students everywhere so I hurriedly made my out. I was running up the stairs of the school when I bumped into someone. Looking up, I came face to face with none other than Andrew Hall, my new boss. He looked down at me and gave me a disgusted face. Surprisingly, I wasn’t shocked. I have encountered quite a few people with glares and nasty comments sent my way before.
Before he could muster anything negative to say, I introduced myself.
"Oh, I know who you are." He muttered, looking away quickly.
Okay, now I was beyond confused. This guy had just gave me a job, and sent me a dirty look all the while knowing who indeed I was.
"Oh. Well I'll see you on Monday. Mr. Hall." I smiled
He didn't even say anything else.. he just walked away, totally ignoring my farewell.
I huffed and finally came face to face with my kids. Amara grinned and showed me her painting of a tree. "Look at this tree mommy!" I took it in my hands and smiled down at her. "It's beautiful, just like you."
I then realized Nuh was standing off to the side talking to his friend.
"Oh Nuh who's your new friend." I said smiling down at the little two boys.
"Mommy, this is Ethan. He's new here and he loves cars just like me!" I chuckled slighty, typical Nuh. That boy was obsessed with cars.
"Well it's very nice to meet you Ethan. I'm Alia but you can call me Ms.Heden."
- "Ethan! What are doing?! Come on! We're going to be late. Your mom is waiting for you." An all too familiar voice shouted.
I looked back and that's right, came face to face with the all too infamous Andrew Hall. Before I could even say anything, he grabbed Ethan's hand and proceeded towards his car.
I took hold of both of my children's hand and we made our way down the stairs of the building.
As we were walking I felt eyes on me and being the curious woman I am, I looked and saw Andrew Hall flat out staring at me.
I haven't even started working for him and this man is already confusing me to no end.
