"You know Sierra beauty isn't everything.." My mother says for the millionth time as she puts on what seems to be 50 pounds worth of gems on my face. "It's the only thing" I say with an agitated eye roll. "Exactly." She says. "But mother, what if... Just what if beauty... Wasn't...... The only thing." I say just barely loud enough for her to hear, right before she strikes her hand across my face. "Sierra how could you say such a thing!" "But mother..." "But nothing Sierra. Now just look at what you made me do, your gems are ruined and I'll have to start over!" Then -thankfully- just when I needed her, my older sister Kenna came in. "Mother why are you screaming!" Kenna says. "That is none of your concern Kenna, but will you please redo Sierra's gems for me." My mother replies. "Of course mother, anything else?" "No, that will be all." She says to Kenna, then right before exiting the room she whispers into my ear,"This conversation isn't over." Then slams the door close. "What was that all about?" Kenna asks me, so as calmly as possible I tell her the whole story as best as I can, being careful not to miss any details, then when I'm done she says, "Sierra I know that you have never been crazy over the whole beauty thing, but you do need to wake up and smell the roses, our whole lives surround around beauty and it's always been like that, you need to learn to accept it." "No, I don't. And you don't need to either. What if we escape, what if we leave and never come back." I tell her hoping that she will agree and we can go. "You know that's not possible. Because even if I wanted to, which by the way, I don't, we couldn't leave." "And why not Kenna we've heard stories of tribe members escaping and running away, never coming back. We could do that. We could change our lives, start over. But this time we'll change things. Do things differently than they do here." "Those are just stories Sierra, they could never happen. We have been told countless of times that they are just stories and nothing else." "Exactly Kenna, we were told that they were just stories, but have you ever stopped for just one moment and really thought about it, what are the chances no one has ever tried to leave this place. Because I've thought about it. And trust me it's possible, there's tons of ways to escape from here." "I know Sierra. It's possible to escape, but let's say that I say yes to your plan and we pack our things and go, what will we do. Like you said, we'll have to start all over. From zero. And what are the chances that we'll even survive long enough to be able create this new life." "Honestly, I don't know Kenna. But what I do know is that this isn't a way of life. We need to ...." "Sierra. We don't to do anything. Life is great here there's nothing to complain about." By this point, I could tell she was starting to get mad. But I didn't care. "Nothing to complain about! There's a lot of things to complain about! Starting with the fact that all of you are only skin deep, you guys only care about our appearance, you don't care if we have the worst heart ever all you care about is looking good." I know that might have been to far but I needed to get that out somehow. "Whatever Sierra. Just remember not to go spreading your crazy suicide missions all around the town." So at that point she finally got tired of me and left. Leaving me to do my gems all my myself.
