"You know this isn't too bad," Cade told me between bites of his food. "I thought shades didn't eat human food." I said staring at my plate of what looked like mashed potatoes and something else. "We don't. I just like the taste. It has no nutritional value." I rolled my eyes. "I wish my life were that simple." I sighed, resting my chin on the palm of my hand and staring out the window at the green space in front of the school. The clearing of Cade's throat snapped me out of my daze and I quickly turned back towards him, getting a mouthful of hair in the process. Cade laughed and ran his hand through his hair. "I said, can you bend the elements?" I was a little caught off guard by his question, but I nodded apprehensively and grabbed some water out of my bag. I placed the bottle on the table and took the cap off, placing it gently on the smooth table. "Ready?" I asked. Cade nodded and leaned in to get a better look.
I took in a sharp breath and slowly moved my fingers in a swirling manner. The water followed my hand out of the bottle and followed the swaying movement of my fingers. I took in another breath again and suddenly my once liquid water was now ice. I smiled approvingly and Cade held out his hand cautiously touching the ice. "Can you reverse it?" He asked still looking curiously at the ice form. "Of course." I concentrated on the ice until it slowly reverted back to water. I formed it into a ball and quickly popped it into my mouth. Cade smiled and clapped approvingly.
"You are by far the coolest person I've met." Cade said, leaning his elbows on the table. I smiled and shrugged. "I'm pretty sure there are people with cooler powers," I said. I could feel the heat rising to my cheeks. I touched them and looked away. "Hey, there's nothing to be embarrassed about." Cade said soothingly. I turned back to him and gave him an apologetic smile. He smirked raised his fork to his mouth. I rolled my eyes and laughed at his easygoing personality.
"So you got a boyfriend?" Cade asked me suddenly. I paused so suddenly that I dropped my fork making my so called mashed potatoes smack into the air and onto my face. Cade quickly got up to help me clean up the mess, he laughed the whole time. "So I'll take that as a no?" He said while waving his hands nervously. I nodded. "You can just say I'm forever alone." I whispered, laughing at my own little joke. "Nonsense you're beautiful." Cade said easily. I grinned and felt myself blushing again. I shyly looked down at my food and poked it with my fork. "Hey umm Onix, can you umm help me a little,I mean this is kind of serious." I heard Cade say, but I was too embarrassed to look up. I cant believe he just said that. "Onix!" I suddenly looked up to see Cade's lunch tray on fire. "Oh my gosh!" I yelled."I'm so so sorry."
"Can you stop apologizing and help me out!" Cade screamed. I quickly pinched my fingers together and swiped them in a straight line making the fire go out. "I'm guessing this has something to do with my previous comment?" I nodded and frowned looking down at the remains of the lunch tray ashamed at what I had just done. "Remind me to compliment you near non-flammable objects next time." Cade sighed. He pushed the tray aside, one second he was in front of me and the next he was beside me. "Whats the matter I'm not mad at you, you know." Cade said soothingly. I smiled as he wrapped a cold arm around me. It made me seize up and goosebumps began rising on my arms, but I quickly relaxed under his embrace. "I know I'm just really embarrassed." I whispered. He hugged me tighter. "Don't be, I would never ever try to make you uncomfortable." I nodded. "I know, I'm still embarrassed though. I didn't even know I could do that!" Cade raised his eyebrows quizzically. "Are you sure? I mean don't supernaturals usually know what they're capable of?"
"Sometimes," I said. I slowly got up and Cade let his arm drop quickly from my shoulders. "Where are you going? he called after me"
"I'm going to do some research."
"Can I come?"
"If you want." Cade traveled right beside me and quickly matched his pace with mine. We walked in silence. Very awkward silence, but I was determined to find out even a little about myself. As we neared the library I heard a small snicker from behind me. I turned towards the sound, but Cade kept on moving. I tried to reach for his arm to stop him, but he was too fast. "Let's just go Onix I'm pretty sure it's nothing." He said, but I could hear the anger in his voice. "What's wrong? Who's bothering you?" I wasn't stupid. I could tell that whoever had laughed just a second ago was the cause of Cade's sudden mood change.
"Well well, looks like Cade finally found someone to actually talk too. To bad it wont last for long." A tall figure stepped from out of the shadows. He was wearing all black and wore a half smile on his lips. "Leave me alone Vir." Cade snarled still turned around. "What's wrong? Are you afraid?" Vir said tauntingly. "That's enough, both of you." I said. "Let's go Cade. He obviously has nothing better to do." Cade nodded, but turned around to look at his aggressor one more time before we walked away.
As we entered the library a silent hush fell over us. For once I was the one to break the silence. "Who was that?" I demanded. Cade angrily sat in one of the deep velvet chairs in the gigantic room. It was lined on all the walls with books and little nooks and crannies for you to read in. I had always loved this place since I first came here in 9th grade. "Just my stupid step brother. He's always bugging me at the worst times." I sat down next to him and stared down at my shoes. "It seems worse than what your telling me." I said quietly. "Of course, I just don't want to burden you with a long story." I nodded. "You can tell me whenever you're ready." I could tell that this was a subject he didn't want to touch on today. I would not push him.
"Onix, is that you?" I heard the sweet sounding voice of the librarian as she walked hesitantly my way. I got up from my seat and quickly ran up to greet her. She brightened up when she realized she had guessed right. "Hello Cara, how are you?" I asked. Cara was like my aunt but closer. Her and my mother were best friends and every childhood memory I had, always had Cara in them. She had always been the high school librarian since I was born and it fit her power well seeing that she was a Scio. She remembered everything.
"I'm quite fine my dear, and who is this?" She asked pointing a polished finger towards Cade. "This is my friend Cade, we just met today." I said happily. Cade got up from his seat and greeted Cara. "Oh yes I remember you now. Your copy of the Supernatural Chronicles is over due." She said dully. "Oh yeah about that..." Cade said while scratching the back of his neck. "Never mind boy," Cara said shaking him off. "What is it I can help you with Onix?"
"Well actually I came to research about Elementals." I said. Cara's eyes widened a little like she was taken back. She quickly rushed over to her huge round desk in the middle of the library and beckoned us to come with her. I followed of course, but was still slightly confused as to why she had acted the way she did. I mean she had known about my powers since I was little. I dont see why it had changed now.
She quickly ran to her desk and leaned over very close so that no one but me could hear her. "Girl you best be wise and not mention that around here." She said. "What do you mean? The school already knows what I am." I said. "Exactly. They are keeping a close eye on you, trust me." I swallowed the lump that was forming in my throat. "Why what's wrong with me?" Cara looked around the room quickly. "I'm sorry darlin, that's something I should leave to your parents."
"What do you mean Cara? What are they keeping from me?" I asked staring at her in disbelief. "I'm sorry Onix. I can't get involved. You have to understand." She looked at me through her glasses and reached her arm out to touch mine. Her brown hair looked paler than usual and her neon green eyes looked tired. "I'm sorry baby. I would help you if i could." She whispered. "But you have to know something," I pleaded. "You're an Scio for crying out loud. I know you know something, don't lie to me." She turned away, grabbing some books that needed to be shelved with her. "I never ever lied to you Onix Todd. Remember that." She stated and then she walked away, leaving me with so many questions and no one to answer them.
