"Only the victors are allowed to live. This world is merciless like that."
-Mikasa Ackerman

"Why'd they do that to you?" I asked Armin. We had gone down to near the dock, on a few steps beside the water. Mikasa was still acting standoffish, sitting in front of us with her arms crossed. I sat on the ledge facing Armin, whilst Eren sat beside me angrily throwing rocks into the water.

"Well, they just heard me rattling on about how mankind's future lay beyond the walls. Doubt they understood half of it, but still." He sighed.

"Idiots." Eren cursed, throwing another rock into the water. "Why's it gotta be this way? Why can't people let us dream?"

"Everyone has different opinions on this Eren. We are the minority here. It's easier for people to ignore the outside world and continue to live their lives peacefully." I pointed out.

"The walls are a powerful idea. We've survived for a hundred years because of them. No one's keen on tempting fate. I may not agree with that sentiment, but I can see where they're coming from. It's human nature guys. When all's said and done, the governments policies are a reflection of our fear." Armin said wisely. (HE LITERALLY SAID THAT IN THE ANIME HE IS THE SMARTEST TEN YEAR OLD EVER WTF ARMIN FOR PRESIDENT)

"The rest of the herds maybe. I say to hell with them!" Eren said angrily.

"Someone's gonna hear you." Mikasa scolded. "Keep it down."

"Sorry." I mumbled. I tended to listen to Mikasa a lot more than Eren did. She was smart, in a different way to Armin. Street smart. Whilst I could fight, she knew how to avoid trouble. Her judgement was pretty good.

"Why do I care? You'd rat me out anyway." Eren grumbled.

"What?" Armin asked in confusion.

"I never promised anything." Mikasa retorted.

"Your parents know about the Scouts?"

"Basically. And they're not too pleased." Eren told him.

"Your father didn't seem to mind." I commented.

"Well, my mother's word is practically law." Eren sighed.

"Yeah, big shock." Armin said sarcastically. I don't think anyone's parents would be approving of their child wanting to join the Scouts.

A cool breeze went past, giving a tense atmosphere.

"It's sad, what some people are willing to settle for in exchange for some sense of security, you know. The walls can't hold forever." Armin said grimly. "It's only a matter of time."

It went quiet again, none of us wanting to add to Armin's statement.

Suddenly, there was a big bang and the sky lit up. The ground jolted, sending us flying from where we sat. We all screamed, and landed awkwardly on the steps just as the shaking stopped. Was it some sort of earthquake.

"What was that!?" Armin asked.

"I dunno." Eren rubbed his head.

"Look!" I said, pointing to above a building. Somewhere in the distance, smoke was emitting into the sky. Mikasa rubbed her shoulder from where she landed on it. Luckily Eren, Armin and I had landed on the ground and not the concrete steps.

People on the street started running towards the wall. Armin took off, me running after him.

"Guys, wait up!" Eren called after us.

I looked up at the walls, terrified in what was behind it.

"What are you doing? Talk to me, what's going on, some kind of explosion or-" Eren said as he caught up with us. Armin and I stood staring at the wall. Eren followed our gaze, his mouth dropping in shock once he saw it.
