October 21, 1993 - Brooklyn, NY
"Wade!" Vanessa called from the bathroom of their tiny New York apartment.
"What?!" Wade said with a mouth full of a two-day old sandwich.
"Get your a** in here, now!" Vanessa yelled.
"You know we're only 20 feet apart, you don't need to ye- What the f*** is that?" He said as he walked into the bathroom. Vanessa was sitting on the bathroom floor with mascara running down her face, whilst holding a pregnancy test.
"Uh..." He was at a loss for words.
"I'm pregnant, it's positive." She said as she handed the test to him.
"Well, I don't know why you'd be crying at a negative pregnancy test." He said sarcastically.
"This is not the f***ing time for jokes, Wade." She said as she threw a roll of toilet paper at him.
"What are we going to do with it?" He said as he folded his arms
"It's called a baby, and I'm not getting an abortion." She said while scowling at him.
"I didn't say you should get an abortion." He said while folding his arms.
"I know you were thinking about it." She said as she wiped her tears.
"Well, what the f*** do we know about raising a kid? Nothing." He said with a serious tone.
Vanessa stared at the floor for a few seconds and then stood up to and looked him dead in the eyes and said: "We are doing this."
"Well, it's your fault if it turns out to be a little s***." He said while pointing at her.
As she walked past him she stopped and told him "Oh, and this means you'll have to get a job." She said with a smirk.
November 25, 1993 - Brooklyn Hospital, Brooklyn, NY
Wade and Vanessa sat in a small waiting room in the hospital anxiously (Well at least she was anxious) waiting to hear her name being called. Wade was reading a four-month-old issue of The Rolling Stone Magazine with a picture of Madonna on the cover. A 30ish-year-old blond-haired woman in scrubs walked out from behind a curtain and looked down at a clipboard and yelled "Vanessa".
Vanessa immediately shot up from her seat, it took Wade a second to realize her name was called. They followed the nurse down a hall and stopped at an open door. Wade and Vanessa walked in and she immediately started to panic.
What if there's something wrong.
What if I can't take care of it.
What if.
Wade and Vanessa sat there in two little chairs, side by side, waiting for the doctor to walk in. They waited about five minutes, what seemed like hours, until the doctor walked in immediately congratulating the soon-to-be parents. "If you could just hop up on the chair and lie down." The doctor said with a cheerful smile.
Vanessa sat in the chair and Wade came to her side. "Let's get this show on the road and find out what kind of monster we're having." Wade said with a smirk dancing across his face.
The doctor put some gel on Vanessa's stomach and then moved it around with the probe and a picture appeared on the monitor.
Now Wade was anxious. He was anxious to find out the gender, which to him would ultimately decide if he is capable of taking care of this child. Of their child.
"Okay, well it looks like you two are having a beautiful baby girl, congratulations!" The doctor exclaimed. Wade and Vanessa were relieved yet still anxious at the same time. They just stared at each other for what seemed like an eternity.
Could they handle raising a child together?
