She wrapped her arms around him, holding him tight.
"You're not the same stuck-up little boy I once had a crush on" she told him in a joking manner.
He laughed. Oh, how she loved the sound of his laugh.
"You've grown up, Sasuke-kun" she sighed. "And so have I."
The mysterious raven haired boy wasn't so mysterious anymore. Because she knew him now, inside and out.
"I know you have, Sakura" he said as he sat up straight and smiled at her. "And you're strong and beautiful...you deserve everything."
"I'm not used to you being so nice, Sasuke-kun" she said, smiling back at him.
"Neither am I" he joked and they both began to laugh.
"And I might not be able to give you everything.." he continued. "Because I still need to go.."
She nodded sadly.
"But Sakura, I promise that if you're willing to wait for me I'll give you everything I can." he said to her. "And we'll make our own family, I'll protect you all I can."
She smiled, getting teary eyed again. She was always the emotional type.
"I'll always wait for you, Sasuke-kun."
Then he kissed her, and in that moment she felt like everything she ever did was worth something.
And he felt it too.
She was his reason to return, she was his promise itself. Because he loved her more than anyone or anything.
And of course he loved his friends, his sensei's--but this was a different love.
One that not only gave him a reason to survive, but one that made him want to live.
After a while, they broke apart. But they still held each other close.
"You won't have to wait long" he said to her.
"I promise, I'll be back before you know it" he said as he kissed her forehead. "And I'll return home a better man than I was before."
And with that he stood up and with one last smile to her, he left.
She didn't cry after that because she knew he'd come back home one day."See you soon, Sasuke-kun."
