CHAPTER 1

I groaned with annoyance. Someone was knocking on my door and they wouldn’t stop.

“Donna you need to get ready. Your last day of school is today!”

I groaned again. “What time is it Grace?”

“6:45, Donna. You’ve got 15 minutes to get ready.”

“I’m up, I’m up!”

I lazily got out of bed and headed to the bathroom to take a quick shower to get me ready for the day. After simultaneously trying to brush my teeth and blow dry my hair, something that didn’t work as well as I thought, I went back to my room to get dressed.

Since it was the last day, I wanted to look pretty. I changed into a pair of skinny jeans, a white tank top, my flower printed kimono, and my black sandals. I swiped a bit of mascara onto my lashes and dabbed some lip gloss on my lips and I was ready. I dashed out of my room and headed to the kitchen to get some breakfast.

Grace being the sweetheart that she was had already laid out a few choices for me to choose from. There was a plate filled with a variety of cheeses, another one with crispy bacon strips, a plate of omelets, jam and toast.

Glancing at the clock that was hanging from the wall, I let out a breath of relief.

Seven thirty.

I had thirty more minutes till my first class started. I ate a bit of everything until I couldn’t anymore. I grabbed my keys of the counter, my bag of the floor and ran to the car. Grace was waiting by the door of my car smiling at me.

“Last day Donna, excited?”

“You have no idea! Ashley might be coming over, so I need you to make your delicious ribs for us. ” I grin.

“I will, now off you go, drive safely.”

I get into the car, throwing my bag on the seat next to me. I start the car, and wave at Grace as I start making my way down the street.

Today was the last day of school! I couldn’t believe it. My parents would have been so proud to known that I was the one with the highest grades. I sighed thinking about them.

I couldn't help but think about my family. They left for an urgent business trip a month ago and all I got was a note telling me that I should keep the house clean and there should be no parties. My parents leaving for business was a regular occurrence and I was used to them leaving, but this time they took my younger brother with them. They all went to the one place that I’ve always wanted to visit, Italy. They knew how much I wanted to go and that’s what hurt the most.

My mother was the definition of a lady, coming from one of the best family’s. She managed the funding for charities and she established ‘The Elite Ladies’ club. I remember the look of disappointment on her face when I told her I was volunteering at an animal shelter; she was disgraced. And that hurt more than all the fights we had. She would give good advice only when I really needed it but other than that, you could say that we weren’t as close as other girls and their mothers.

My father on the other hand, was a joyful business man. He co-owned a huge company with his best friend Robert. This company was one that got thousands and millions of dollars every day. My family and I were well off when it came to money. My father taught us the importance of money and to always appreciate what we have.
