The Maze Runner (Hayden Love Story)

Chapter Two

I needed rest, however I was afraid that if I went to sleep; I wouldn't wake up. Hayden had found me sitting alone, clearly he could see my distress.
"Are you alright?" He asked as he sat down beside me outside the homestead.
"I'm just, very confused." I admit as I stare out at the field in front of us.
"You always are on the first day, but things will get better; trust me." He replied with a soft smile.
"Thank you." I said quietly. "Since I've got here; you've been the one that has made me feel like I'm not entirely alone."
"Because you're not." Hayden smiles gently. "Y'know, you're not what I imagined a girl to be like."
"What?" I asked with a laugh. "Did you expect girls to be quiet, innocent and vulnerable?"
"Something like that." He laughs in return.
At that moment; 2 tall masculine boys approached us, their eyes glued on me.
"Is this the newbie everyone's talking about?" One boy asked.
"Yeah, still pretty oblivious to things however." Hayden replied. "Greenie, this is Newt; he's third in command."
Newt nodded and did a small wave, he doesn't seem so bad.
"Who's second in command?" I asked as I looked at Hayden.
"You're looking at him." Hayden said grinning at me.
"Oh." I turned my head to see Newt slightly laughing at my reaction.
"And this is Clint; he's keeper of the Med-Jack's." Hayden said pointing to the chubby boy with brown hair.
"Med-Jacks?" I ask clueless.
"They're like the Glades doctors." Newt said, answering for Ruvik.
"Love'd to introduce myself but Gally's holding a meeting and he wants you there." Clint says pointing at Hayden as he looks over his shoulder.
Hayden starts getting up as Newt smiles nicely at me when I looked at him.
"Right; well Greenie you can-"
"She'll need to stay here; Gally's request." Clint replies and he looks back at me. Hayden stops and turns to face me.
"Go, I'll just stay here and cause absolutely no trouble and stay out of mischief." I say with an innocent smile and touch of sarcasm.
"Well; that sounds promising." Laughs Newt.
"I'll be right back." Hayden replies placing his hand on my shoulder before he, Newt and Clint run across the Glade to the meetings location.
Now; as from what I can remember; I'm not the type of person that eavesdrops, but due to my new circumstances, I think I can ignore that rule.

I followed Hayden, Newt, and Clint as they entered the small hut where the meeting was taking place. I hid in a bush underneath an open window and popped my head up slightly so I could just see through the window. I saw lots of wooden benches with many of the Gladers sitting with their backs to me. Gally was standing at the front, Alby and Hayden stood on one side and Newt on the other. When Gally was sure all the Gladers were here; he began.
"For all of you that don't know; we got a new Greenie today." He announced. "A girl, but had anyone even used their shankin' brains to think that she could be a bad sign from the creators? An 'omen' if you will."
"The girl's only just arrived, how can you say she's an omen?" Hayden asked as he leaned against the wall.
"Because she's the only one; Shank; ever thought about that?" Gally replied.
"What if others come? What if she's just the first of many?" A Glader asked.
"I bloomin' hope not." Gally replied as he rubs his temple.
"Listen." Alby says calmly as he steps forward. "This girl doesn't know nothin' she's as clueless about the creators as you and I."
"That don't mean she ain't a threat." Gally replies.
"Listen to yourself slinthead." Newt laughs as he steps forward. "The Greenie don't know bloody nothin'."
Hayden nodded a thanks to Newt and Newt nodded back. I felt my heart racing. I never meant to cause trouble, I never meant to be an inconvenience. I don't remember anything so how could I be dangerous? How could I be a threat?

"Listen ye' shanks." Gally continues. "The girl's got 'trouble' written all over her, girls don't usually pop out from that box."
"But she did." Hayden said firmly. "And I expect you to treat her like any other Greenie, got it?"
"You bleedin' shank, can't you see the threat here? She's a girl! We ain't had one before!" Yells Gally.
"He's right." Alby says as he steps forward. "We haven't, but that doesn't mean we treat her any differently; a Greenie is still a Greenie."
"Have you lost your bleedin' minds?" Gally shouts as he bangs his fist down on the table. "The girl's a threat, she's gonna kill us all!"
"Slim it; Shank!" Yells Newt.
"This meeting is over." Alby says as he dismisses the Gladers. "My word is final, the girl is a Greenie like no other."
"Anybody caught harming her will be banished." Hayden adds.
"Damn shank, pretty harsh don't ye' think?" Alby asks.
"No." Hayden replies as he sits on one of the wooden benches. "We will keep order, I'll be sure of it."
