Followers are awesome, and we all want them!
They see right away when you add a new story- no need to seek out an audience, you already have one!
They can recommend you to their friends, giving you MORE followers!
And some of them can become your good friends. :)
"But Holly Ruth, how do I get followers?"
Let me tell you! There are a few strategies, some I've actually used and some I haven't, but I'll share them all with you anyway since I've seen them all work.
1. Write things!!! Lots of things!!!
If you have a wide variety of stories, you will gain more followers because there's a larger audience you appeal to! For example: ella_enchanted has lots of followers and reads, and she also has lots and lots and LOTS of different stories! (Ten, I just counted! And I've read at least 3 of them!)
2. Make your profile nice
Again, we're going to reference ella_enchanted. She has a picture that's not one of the generic wattpad ones. Take two minutes of your life and find a unique profile picture AND BACKGROUND! It shows that you actually care about wattpad and is a sign to potential followers that you're probably someone who will be posting often and writing well.
Also, say something profound/funny/interesting in your "about me" section! I promise she isn't paying me to keep referencing her, but go back to ella_enchanted. She has a hilarious "about me" section and it's probably half the reason I decided to follow her!
3. Follow
Follow other people. I've found that about 1/4 of the time (with the exception of those super popular wattpad authors who have approximately a billion followers and are following like 2 people), people will follow you if you follow them. In addition, I've seen some people who say in their "about me" section, "If you follow me, I'll follow you back!" This will gain you more followers (who are looking for followers), so if you don't mind following people solely because they followed you, this might be a good idea. Just make sure that if you put this on your profile, you actually DO follow everyone back!
4. Vote and comment
Make yourself known by commenting and voting on stories you read! Almost every time someone comments on LDYH I go and stalk their profile, not going to lie. So by commenting and voting on stories, you'll at least bring more people to look at your profile. And people have to look at your profile before they can follow you, so I mean... :-)
(side note: This is also a great way to get more reads! When I stalk people's profiles I always look at their stories, and if they look interesting I'll normally read at least the first chapter or two!)
I think that's about it.
Some less-common ways to get followers include offering edits or covers in exchange for followers, but unless you're a graphic designer or a well-known author, you probably won't get many followers these ways.
Also, if you have more than one wattpad account, link them together! Say "Hey, I have this other wattpad account, it's called kiera_cass_fans (or whatever your second/third/fourth account is) and you should check it out!"
