I woke up on apple-green grass. Fresh, morning dew clung onto each blade. The grass was tickling my bare feet, which caused me to sit up. My hands were covered in dirt, and were filthy. What was I doing, sleeping on grass? My thoughts then travelled to another, more important question. Where was I?
My bed was stood an inch away from me. Its white sheets and pale purple pillows had gone untouched. The strange thing is that I remembered climbing into it as soon as I arrived home from school, feeling fatigued.
I scanned my surrounding for any clues to give away where I was, but I couldn't find a single one. The sun was high up in the sky, but it was still dark and the moon was still shining brightly. Not even a tiny hint of the sun's light could be found. Was it morning or night? There didn't even seem to be any sign of life here.
I got up off the grass, brushing down my jeans in case any dirt or grass was visible. I decided to search for any people, houses or shops. I walked about for a few minutes, wondering where I was actually going. Maybe I should have thought about that first?
My foot slipped on something, causing a few rocks or stones to fall and make a loud splash. Was I standing on a cliff, near water? I stepped back, thinking that I wouldn't need to worry about falling over the edge, but then it occurred to me that I didn't know where the cliff ended, as it was too dark to see. All around me, I could hear something crack and the ground began to shake. It felt how I imagined an earthquake feeling. What was happening?
Suddenly, the ground beneath me gave way, and I tried to let out a scream. I panicked when no sound came out of my mouth. I could feel myself falling, and it scared me that I didn't know what was underneath me when I landed. I wondered if this was how Alice felt when she fell down the rabbit hole?
That's when I felt a cold hand grip my warm one. In that moment, I didn't care who it was, I was just glad I had stopped falling for now. The hand pulled me up swiftly with ease, and once again, I found myself back on the grass.
By now, a hint of light from the sun, had spread, and I could see everything. I was indeed on a cliff, but the ground looked perfectly safe, as though nothing had happened. In front of me, I saw the owner of the hand that had saved me. At first, I didn't know what to say or do. The figure was a boy, who had his face concealed by a black hood. All I could make out was his mysterious blue-green eyes. He was dressed normally, in pale blue jeans and his black hoodie.
"Hello, Olivia Gold." He said, locking his eyes with mine. I looked away, feeling uneasy.
"H-how do you know my name?" I managed to stutter out.
"I know everything." His voice was deeper than I expected, considering how young he looked.
We sat there in silence for awhile, before I spoke.
"Thank you for saving me, but where am I?"
His eyes seemed to smile. "You're in a very special place. There isn't exactly a name for it. You see, it is a place based on your dreams and nightmares."
I was shocked. A place built and created entirely from my dreams and nightmares? How was that even possible?
"But why my dreams?" I questioned.
He shrugged. "Some of the people here believe that you're the one. Everyone has their own land based on their dreams, but not many people get to see them with their own eyes as they don't have a purpose to be there."
I nodded, trying to take it all in. It felt strangely good to be one of few people to experience something like this. I reached into my skinny jean pockets for my phone, when I found that it wasn't there. The boy stared at me, smiling sheepishly.
