Chapter Three

The sun is setting just as we reach the beginning of the woods. We decide to head into the woods already to find a concealed place to sleep. There are many dangers in the woods, but there are also many in the open. We need to be hidden from any dangers.

"I do have a mansion that we could go to or we can go train with the others at the castle." Axel says to us. "We could go to the castle to live, but we would be watched by the other guards. I'd much rather train out here after we get supplies from the castle, but I will let you two decide."

Personally, I'd rather live outside than inside feeling trapped. "I've lived in a building all my life feeling like a prisoner, so I'd rather stay out here to train." I imply. "But it doesn't matter to me all that much."

"I agree." Darren adds. "We can just go get supplies then head back here. I don't want my every move to be watched, even if it's just for protection of the king and prince."

"All right then. We'll leave at first light in the morning. We'll eat after we catch something." Axel hands me his dagger that I had used to spar with Darren. "You'll need this if you're going to catch something to eat. It's yours now. You can do what you'd like, but it's your only weapon until we get more supplies. You've shown me you can use it; now put it to good use."

I look at the dagger carefully. It's a darker metal with a worn down black handle with a silvery hilt. I didn't get to notice all the little details I notice now during our spar. It's a beautiful dagger if you think that weapons are pretty. It's a dangerously sharp knife and would cut down deep with a slight hit. I think of the sword I had used practicing with my father and brother. It was so dull that you could press as hard as you could on a soft surface and not even make a scratch. I still had to use the flat side of the blade because I would swing as hard as I could toward my opponent's side so it would've hurt at least some. I left my brother with tons of bruises and cuts, even though I left without even breaking a sweat.

I've overcome the thoughts that others thought of me as and I know that I will impress others at some time or another. I've fought a guard with words and a weapon. I impressed Axel by defeating Darren with a dagger against a sword. But I still have that barrier that holds all my secrets back. They might not ever be told but some are too tough to bear alone. I almost let loose of one in front of a crowd. I almost cried in front of a crowd. I'm glad I stopped myself before I showed everyone a sign of weakness. I was so close to crying, but thankfully I remembered to put up a cover to stop me from tears. I wouldn't be thought of the same if I had started crying and Axel wouldn't have wanted me if I had cried. But Axel and Darren are wondering why I was brought to the orphanage and I know I'll have to tell them sometime tonight, but it can wait until we finish eating.

The thought of food makes my stomach rumble. I haven't eaten all day and I'm starving. "You ready to catch something yet, Danielle?" Darren asks walking over to me with his sword in hand. "I'm expecting an answer tonight after we eat though." He smiles at me devilishly.

"Let's go see if there's a river to catch some fish." I suggest. "That might be good."

"Okay. I'm all in for that. I could also go see if I can find a kind of bird or rabbit too." Darren adds. "Then we'll have at least some variety."

"Well, we better get going if we're planning on eating." Axel shouts at us from the horses. "I'm getting hungry over here." We all laugh and then start walking to the edge of the clearing. "We'll meet back here when you catch some food. But catch a lot because I'm starving." Darren and I agree with him. It's been a long day of riding.
