Rebecca
I stare out my kitchen window of my lonely temporary home. I wish we could have pets. I'd like a pet. I watch Mary stomp up the front path to my door and I wait for the knock before getting up and letting her in.
"Who was that man last night Rebecca Marie." She growls using my middle name like it's going to hurt me.
"What man?" I say calmly.
"Is this some kind of joke to you!" She yells throwing her hands into the air. "If he's not the one and you're skanking you could get into some serious trouble with the law!"
"Oh calm down Mary. We aren't allowed friends anymore?"
"Male and female can not be friends without a sexual attraction." She grunts. "You know this!"
"I personally am not attracted to him at all. He's dark and I'm not into that. And anyway, I said no."
"I just can not believe you would do something like—" she freezes. "You said no to dinner with that man?"
I nod. Sure I'm lying but she's to dumb to find that out. "I told you I wasn't attracted to him. He's strange and it's against everything I've imagined my man to be."
She sighs. "Oh Rebecca I can't believe you would scare me like this!" She sits down in one of my chairs. "I thought you were skanking!"
"I know." I laugh. "You have no faith in me Mary."
"I do at serious points." She argues.
"Oh. I guess my love life isn't serious enough." I laugh.
"Rebecca you don't have a love life. You have the one and that's the only love you should be receiving."
"Maybe I don't want to find him Mary. Maybe I want some fun."
"No!" She shouts. "Oh your mother would be so unhappy with you! You aren't who you should be and without her around to control you you're getting worse!"
"You say that like I'm sick."
"You are sick Rebecca. Very sick and I don't know what to do with you anymore." She sighs. "You're getting so out of control and soon enough I'll see you face in the paper under the executed column."
"I'm not out of control. Maybe you'd find your soul mate if you weren't so afraid to socialize with boys." I roll my eyes.
"Maybe I shouldn't try so hard to save you. It's pulling me down. This friendship is pulling me down. I have a life ahead of me that you don't need to be a part of." She begins to cry but I ignore it.
"Shut up." I say angrily. "I don't want a life that's all sorted out for me. I want something more. I want to make a difference and if you can't accept that then you need to leave."
"What?" She puts her hands on her hips.
"Leave my home Mary and don't come back."
I ignore her as she stomps out the door. I don't need friends like her. I grab my phone to see a new message.
