Violet's POV
The night sky twinkled with stars and the world was calm. I sat on the white stairs of Melanie's back porch. The long strands of grass tickled my feet as I breathed in the slight aroma of the salty ocean that flew through the air alongside the gentle breeze.
I heard the door to the house open and I didn't turn around, assuming it to be Melanie. But I was proven wrong when Sebastian took a seat next to me. He looked so comfortable and chill, the exact opposite of what he looks like in school.
"Funny, isn't it?" he said, looking down at his feet.
"What?" I asked, oddly comfortable in his precense.
"There is no such thing as a 'broken family.' Family is family, and is not determined by marriage certificates, divorce papers, and adoption documents. Families are made in the heart. The only time family becomes null is when those ties in the heart are cut. If you cut those ties, those people are not your family. If you make those ties, those people are your family. And if you hate those ties, those people will still be your family because whatever you hate will always be with you."
I watched him in awe, not saying anything. "Something with your dad?" I asked, testing the waters.
"When is it not?" he scoffed and watched the sky. I watched with him. And for that moment, that one quiet moment, all was well.
