Chapter Two - Darkness Doesn't Always Bring Evil

"So, this is your home?" Ai asked Lindo, looking up at the house. Lindo gave a nod, looking down at the female. "Let's go inside, you're shivering, even with my jacket on," the male chuckled, walking up the steps. The female stared at him, then ran to catch up to him, clutching the jacket that Lindo had let her use close. Lindo kept the door open for her, and Ai mumbled a 'thank you' as she entered the household. Once Lindo closed the door behind him, Ai gave an appeased sigh.

Ritsuka looked around the corner, seeing Lindo and Ai, and smiled. "Lindo, you're back, you and your friend must be cold," she made her way over to the two. "The fireplace is going, sit in the living room and I'll bring hot chocolate for all of us."

The two gave a nod, "So, Ritsuka, where is mom?" Lindo asked. "She went to the store, we forgot to get flour," the girl explained. "I knew I was forgetting something," Lindo chuckled, leading Ai to the living room. "U-um, here," Ai slipped off the jacket, handing it back to Lindo, "thanks."

Lindo smiled, taking the jacket, then sitting on the couch. Ai looked around the living room with eyes full of curiosity, a smile tugging at the edge of her lips. Lindo watched her, a smile finding its way onto his face as well. After a few seconds, she made her way to the fireplace and sat down, rubbing her arms in order to warm up. She gave out a small sneeze, and Lindo stood up. Ai watched as he left the room, to return a few moment later with a blanket. He draped it over her shoulders with a smile.

Lindo sat back down on the couch, and Ai snuggled up in the blanket. Ritsuka then walked into the room, a tray of hot chocolate in hand. She handed one to Ai, then one to Lindo, sitting down next to him and taking a sip of her own hot chocolate. Ai watched as Lindo also drank the hot beverage, then looked down at the cup in her hands. It smelled amazing. She hesitantly put the cup to her lips, but once it touched her lip, she jumped back. "Ow! It bit me!"

Both Ritsuka and Lindo erupted into a fit of laughter. "You mean it's hot?" Ritsuka asked as the laughter died down, wiping at the tears that were in her eyes from laughing so hard. "Erm... Yeah," Ai mumbled, pink dusting her pale cheeks.

"Blow on it to cool it down," Lindo said to her with a chuckle. Ai gave a nod, blowing on the beverage before taking a sip. She was silent. "Like it?" Ritsuka asked. "No," She began slowly, and Ritsuka frowned. "Let me finish. I don't like it, I love it," Ai took another drink of the beverage in her hands, much longer than the first. Both Ritsuka and Lindo laughed at this. After Ai was done drinking, she laughed with them. It was a nice feeling to Ai, laughing with people. She couldn't remember the last time she had even smiled before this, and theis people, who were almost strangers, where making her laugh like this.

It felt amazing. Ai looked at the male and female relatives and smiled longingly, wishing that she had her family, or at least someone to love her, someone to miss her when she was gone. But, she didn't. And, even though both her and Lindo where dhampirs, She would never have what he did. Even though they were the same, they were also so, so different. Ai looked down at her hand, playing with the ring that was on her middle finger on her right hand. It looked as if it was a silver dragons claw, holding a red stone.

She didn't even realize that another woman had entered the room, and Ritsuka had got up to greet her. Lindo, however, was staring at Ai. "That ring, is it special to you?" Lindo asked, making the girl jump. The ring wasn't special to Ai, it was more than special. It kept her alive. According to Ai it did, anyways. "Yes," she answered quietly, frowning down at the ring. It kept her alive, but she wished it didn't have to.

This 'gift' she was born with, it wasn't a gift to her

This 'gift' she was born with, it wasn't a gift to her. All it did was allow people to use her. It made sure she wasn't like others, or even like Lindo, another dhampir. All she wanted to do was find someone who would love her, not her power. So, she decided not to tell anyone else of that power that the ring hid. "Hey, are you okay?" Lindo asked softly, pulling Ai from her thoughts yet again. She looked up with wide eyes, not knowing what he meant at first, but after touching her cheek and feeling the warm tears that were falling without her even realizing, she knew. Ai smiled reassuringly, wiping her eyes with her sleeve, she gave a nod. Neither Lindo, Ritsuka, or the other woman, who all three were now looking at her, seemed convinced.

Ai stood, then walked over to the other woman in the room. She reminded her a lot of Ritsuka, she she guessed it was her mother, Lindo's Aunt. She extended her hand, "Hello, I'm Ai Chika. But please, call me Tain-San."

The woman took her hand, shaking it gently, as if being too rough would break Ai. Ai understood though, she was short for her age and she was pretty pale. She was pale due to only coming out at night to fight Vampires and Devils, then during the day going threw cleansing rituals to get rid of the evil within her. "Darkness dosnt always bring evil," Ai mumbled after Maria, who Ai had learned the woman's name was, let go of her hand.

"What?" Ritsuka asked curiously. "O-oh.. Sorry, I was just thinking," Ai explained. "'bout what?" Lindo asked.

"Um... Well as you already know, Lindo, I'm a dhampir like you, and I was just thinking of how that dosnt make me or you evil, or unclean, it makes us... Better," she thought out load. "Explain," Lindo whispered with wide eyes.

"Well, we have our humanity, so we still care about each other, and want to protect each other, but we have vampire strength, so we can protect the ones we love.."

Lindo stared at Ai, and for the first time in a long time, he felt his heart speed up. Was it just because of the new outlook she brought to him? The new outlook on his life, on his existence? Or was it something more?

For now, he'll say it was due to the new outlook.
