Chapter 13

Pinkie's P.O.V.
A nest in Wrothmore

  Why and how did dragons evolve to withstand this much heat? Even for me it's really hot. Seriously, it's just dragons here and no other life.

I open my eyes again, stretch, and waddle outside. I'm not tired, and I don't want to bother Ruby, I want to explore.

I hop from foot to foot, the rock underneath my feet scorching hot. I focus for a bit, standing perfectly still as a green hue creeps up from my minty toes up to my knees, the pain disappearing. I continue walking normally, flapping my tiny little wings.

"Oh my god," I heard someone gasp, and I crane my head to see a fully grown Lava dragon gaping at me. "You're Inverted, aren't you?"

I cock my head, confused. What does that mean? I wonder if it has something to do with how I can change my color to stop the pain.

He backs off, shaking, then he runs away, his heavy footfalls vibrating the ground.

"Child." I jump, then stare at the Scorch dragon, recognizing her as Ruby's mom. "You do not understand what that means, do you?" I shake my head no.

"By any chance, have you seen any dragons that act ill with an unnatural color?" I remember clearly when Ruby would hide me away from them, so I nod. "Did they touch you?" I shake my head again. "Hm."

She looks off at a sleeping Ruby, then sighs sadly and turns her gaze back onto me. She offers me her claw, and I shut my tiny jaws around it. Then my heart stops, even before she speaks the words, I know.

"You may be one of them."

I let go and back away, shaking my head no. I have never been bit before, so how could I be? Did my parents pass it down to me somehow? Was my egg tainted?

I can feel that glow wrap around my horns, and I can see the shadow of doubt cross her eyes for me. "I have become one of my own," I say cryptically, and my horns stop to glow. What was that supposed to mean?

  I feel exhausted now, and she can see that. "Come child, you must sleep," she murmurs, picking me up and carrying me as I slip away into the dream world.
