After staying at the restaurant for a while longer, we all finally decided to leave to go home. We had all had a great time just chatting. John, Rachel, the rest of the guys, and I reminisced and told stories about our days when we were younger. It caused plenty of laughter except from Heather. I had only just met her that night, but I didn't like her. At least John dated girls in the past that I could tolerate. I knew I wouldn't be able to tolerate this one. I guess it didn't hurt to try though.

"So, Brooke," John said as we walked outside of the restaurant ahead of everyone else.

"So, John," I said back to him.

"Why don't we exchange cell phone numbers and we can schedule a time to hang out together," he said as he got his cell phone out.

"Alright then," I said as I search for my phone in my purse, finally retrieving it. We exchanged phones and programmed our numbers into them. He handed me mine back and I handed him his.

"John, I'm ready to leave," Heather said as she walked over to us. "Let's go."

"Okay," he said. "Bye, Brooke. It's really nice to see you back."

"Bye, John," I said and smiled to him.

I watched as he walked away with Heather. I was so glad that I had John back in my life. I would be lying if I said I didn't think about him everyday that I was gone. Who could blame me? He had been my best friend as well as my crush.

"Ready to go, Brooke?" Rachel asked me.

"Yeah."

We both walked to Garrett's car where he was already inside waiting for us. I got into the backseat and buckled myself in as he began to drive.

"So, I take it you and John are friends again," Rachel said as she turned around to look at me.

"We're working on it," I said as I smiled.

"I'm glad," she said. "Now maybe the both of you can be happy."

"Maybe. I'm not a fan of his girlfriend though."

"You were never a fan of any of his girlfriends," she spoke as she laughed. "I have to agree with you though. The girl gets on my nerves."

"Hey, I may not have been a fan of his other girlfriends, but at least they were tolerable," I pointed out.

"I don't like her either," Garrett said, finally speaking up. "She acts so clingy and annoying. I don't know how he puts up with it."

"I'm not clingy am I?" Rachel asked him.

"No, babe," he said as he smiled. "You are not clingy. You're just right."

I watched as Rachel smiled and intertwined her hand into his on the center console. I smiled to myself. They were extremely cute together. That was for sure. I was glad they were happy together. It made me feel even more alone than I had already felt, but I was happy for them.

We made it to my house moments later. I thanked Rachel for inviting me and Garrett for the ride before I got out and walked to the front door. I got the key my mom gave me out of my purse and walked inside the house. I could see that the kitchen light was on so I walked inside to find my mom drinking some tea with a book she had discarded beside her on the table.

"How was your night?" my mom asked as she set her cup down.

"It was fun," I replied. "I had a great time catching up with everyone."

"I'm glad to hear that," she said as she smiled. "I'm guessing John was there."

"He was," I said as I sat down in one of the chairs.

"How did that go?" she asked, curiously.

"Well, not so good at first," I told her, "but we made up and we're working on being friends again."

"You have no idea how happy that makes me," she said. "He really missed you while you were away. He was always asking about you when he would come to see me. I think that's the only reason he did come to see me."

"Oh, mom," I said. "You know that's not true. He would only come for those cookies you made that he loved so much. I'm sure you would make them for him wouldn't you?"

"Of course. I had to make them every other time he was here didn't I?"

I laughed and got up from the chair I was sitting in, stretching as I had.

"I'm going to go get ready for bed," I said. "Good night, mom."

"Good night, Brooke."

I walked out of the kitchen and up the stairs to my room. A smile was placed on my face as I thought about how well the night had went. I definitely hadn't expected all of that to happen, but I definitely wasn't complaining. Especially since I might have my best friend back.
