Epilogue
The funeral was more draining than I realised and I am man enough to admit that I cried on a number of occasions. I seemed that every time I cried Clara would too which means I would have to pick her up, which I didn’t mind because it was nice to know that on some level she realised what was going on.
After the funeral we were having dinner at Cade’s favourite restaurant which was a small locally owned bar. It was a nice place but sadly Harry and I had to go home early, it was nice to see everyone again and even nicer that my family came up for support too.
"Penny for your thoughts?" Harry said sitting down beside me in front of the fireplace.
"Just thinking about stuff," I replied getting comfortable.
"Here I made tea," Harry said as he handed me a mug.
"Thank," I smiled, although it wasn’t much of a smile, "Clara in bed?"
"Sound asleep."
"Thanks for taking care of her tonight."
"It wasn’t a problem, did you do what you needed to."
"You mean lock myself in my room for a few hours, yeah."
"Lou..."
"Harry it’s ok, I’ll be fine, I just needed some space."
"I know, I was just gonna tell you something about Cade."
"That got my attention; I sat up straight, "What about her?"
"You remember when she wanted to talk to me alone briefly, well she gave me these," he pulled out two envelops from behind his back, where was he hiding that? "One is a letter for you."
He handed me one envelop which was marked "Lou". I looked up at Harry, I’m not sure I should open this; I don’t really wanna read anything.
"She thought you might be hesitant to read it, but she did want you to read and she knew if she gave it to you, you never would, so she thought giving it to me was a better idea."
I looked down at the envelop, turned it around and opened it. I pulled out the single A4 sheet of paper and unfolded it.
To my dearest Lou,
I didn’t know what to write at first but now I do.
I have given Harry two envelop, one is obviously this personal letter to you, the other is the paternity test results that we ordered.
I didn’t know how to give it to you before, the possibility of both Harry or yourself being the father made you both so happy and it made you even closer, I didn’t want that to change and you know as well as I do that knowing the truth would change everything.
I guess I wanted to die knowing that you are both looking after our little girl and that she is in good hands.
Whether you open the test results is up to you both.
Lou, the last year of my life have been an amazing adventure thanks to you, you have managed to fit the best life time in to just a few months. Don’t be sad, don’t mourn me, celebrate my life and what you turned it into for me. You made my last few months amazing and I would change any of it for anything. I know that you are very sad at the moment and trying very hard not to let it show but I don’t want you to spend the rest of your life alone and without love. You loved me like no one has before and I tried my best to do the same. Just because I can no longer be there with you in person doesn’t mean I’m not watching or alongside you for the rest of your life but I want you to find love again, to find that spark and to move on, after everything you have done for me you deserve that.
Go out and live your life for us both Louis, life for me as well as yourself and especially for our baby girl.
I love you Louis forever xxxx
"Thanks Haz," I said softly, a tear running down my cheek, I hadn’t even realised I started crying.
"I hope it said what you needed to hear."
"She wants me to move on," I looked up into his eyes.
"You don’t have to forget her Lou; she just wants you to find love again."
"I know, do you think I can do it, move on I mean?"
"I do Lou."
I smiled softly again.
"Hand me the other letter."
Harry gave me the other letter, I looked at it, I knew what I wanted to do but I wasn’t sure whether I would come to regret it or not. I held the letter for few moments before deciding I have to discuss it with Harry.
"It’s the results of the paternity test," I said.
"Ow."
"Do you want to open it?" I asked looking up at him.
"No, I’d rather raise Clara together."
"Really?"
"Of course Lou," Haz said, "You’re my best friend; I wouldn’t want to have a kid with anyone else."
I laughed for the first time since Cade died, "That sounded so wrong."
Harry laughed, "I agree but Lou I’m serious, we can do this."
"You and me against the world."
"You and me against the world," Harry agreed.
I threw the envelop into the fire, Harry and I sat in front of that fire together for the whole night, for the first time in two weeks I had laughed and I already felt a bit better.
I will never forget Cade, I love her with all my heart and will continue to do so, until it is my turn to go, but until than the best I can do is try and move on, raise Clara and have Harry by my side to help me through it all. I love you Cade forever and always.
