Chapter four - Fireworks and Trouble, Galore!

Jack Winslow

--

“It’s simple, just watch me,” I mumbled while I skimmed through some instructions on the back of one of the fireworks. After a few seconds I finished and put the firework in the sand.

“How did you read the instructions so fast? You’re a slow reader!” Annie said with fake shock.

“Thanks. And I don’t need to read it all, I’m already a pro,” I said, searching for a match.

“Jack, I don’t think that’s such a great idea. Read it...” She said, her eyes growing wide as she got more nervous as she thought about it more. I smiled lightly.

“Pshaw! Jack the master of fireworks knows all!” I said confidently, as I finally found a match. I lit it and was about to put the match to the firework when something- well, someone- slapped my hand making the match go flying into the sand. I quickly stomped on the match, just to be safe.

“Not yet, you goose! I’m not ready!” Adrian yelled in my ear. Ouch, she’s loud.

“I have to light them soon! We only have an hour before people come! Don’t worry, it’s a small one,” I said looking into her eyes to help calm her down.

“Fine.”

Once again I lit the match and got ready to light the firework off. I looked up at Adrian to get the final nod, and lit the firework.

The firework went up into the sky, then lit up before giving a small bang. The green lights fizzled out, falling out of the sky. Adrian grinned at me, and I grinned back.

“Hey nice to see you here!” Adrian called over to one of her many friends. She flashed me a smile before leaving my side and walking over to her friend. I looked around at the party. There was a small bonfire with logs someone had put around it. There was a table full of drinks, and some tables and chairs with snack foods on them. It was a perfect beach party.

“Hey Jack! Over here!” A feminine voice called. I looked around and saw Scarlett waving at me.

Scarlett had flaming red hair that matched her name perfectly. She was crazier than Adrian, and that’s saying something. But Scarlett also loved to flirt, something I didn’t enjoy very much.

“Hi Scarlett. I’m glad you could make it,” I said politely. She smiled at me while taking a step closer to me. She was now very close.

“Me too. I wasn’t going to come until I heard you were going to be here,” She said with what was probably supposed to be a flirty smile.

“Scarlett, what are you doing?” James her boyfriend said coming behind her while he reached for her hand.

“Just having a conversation with Jack,” She said while smiling innocently into her boyfriends eyes. James stared coolly into my eyes. He smiled tightly, obviously thinking I had started the flirting.
