“Do we have to watch this movie?” I begged Austin, sticking out my bottom lip in an attempt to persuade him. He laughed, ruffling my hair playfully before settling on the couch beside me.

“Don’t give me that face Marianna, you know I can’t resist it,” he replied, causing my heart to flutter momentarily. I couldn’t help but have a tiny crush on my best friend. He’s extremely cute and sweet, how could anyone possibly not like him? “And yes we do. It’s really funny!”

“I think that it’s kinda annoying.”

He gasped, “How can you say that?!”

“You totally sound like a typical white girl.” I giggled, rolling my eyes as boring title screens adorned the TV. We both had extremely different preferences when it came to movies or television shows, one of the reasons why I loved being his best friend. Most people thought it was just for the fame and attention but honestly I don’t care about any of that. I stay because I’ve known him since birth and couldn’t be bothered to listen to haters.

“Hey, I am a typical white girl don’t judge me. Now let’s watch the movie,” Austin insisted, casually draping an arm over my shoulders on the couch. To him it obviously was normal but to me it felt like thousands of butterflies were flying around in my stomach. You’d think after liking him for so many years I would man up and tell him but I believed in the cliché and didn’t want to risk ruining our relationship. Friendship was more important to me than being his girlfriend at this point.

“Roseee, are you okay? There’s nothing on my face is there?” My best friend pointed out; using one of the many nicknames he gave me a long time ago.

“Huh? Oh, uh no. Sorry.” I blushed rapidly, leaning further into his side so he couldn’t sense my embarrassment. Wow, smooth move Marianna. Why don’t you just tell him you like him while you’re at it?!

Shaking off my humiliation, I actually began to thoroughly watch the movie, seeing there was nothing else to do. Surprisingly it was actually decent although I’d never actually admit it to Austin. He’d tease me nonstop about how he’s always right and I’m always wrong which is definitely not true. Marianna is always right, even when she’s wrong. Why is Marianna referring to herself in third person? The world will never know.

“We need to make this night a little more interesting,” I mused, snatching up the nearly full bowl of popcorn from his unsuspecting hands.

“How?”

“I throw the popcorn, you have to catch it in your mouth.”

“As long as you don’t purposely try to throw it in my eyes I’m in,” he agreed, chuckling slightly at his own words while scooting back on the couch. Just to piss him off I threw the first piece too high, making it ‘accidentally’ hit him directly on the nose. He scowled, sticking his tongue out at me before opening his mouth once again.

“Marianna goes in for the shot!” I cheered, tossing it straight into my target, “And she scores!”

“The imaginary crowd goes wild!” Austin played along, grinning at me mischievously. We went through a couple more rounds until I extremely had to pee and excused myself to go to the bathroom. Along the way I was almost certain that I heard banging and loud footsteps downstairs but it was probably only in my head.

After doing my business, I spent a little time gazing in the mirror, only to notice that my usual light blue eyes were darker than usual.

Must be the lack of sleep, I thought, shaking off any worries before I ventured back downstairs.

“What the hell?” I mumbled quietly to myself upon seeing popcorn kernels leading to the kitchen. Although Austin was messy, how could he have not bothered to pick up these? After gathering up the small things in one hand I ambled to the kitchen, gasping at what was laid out in front of me.

“Austin, w-what is this?” Was all I could make out as my eyes traveled back and forth from the lit candles to the brunette standing with a rose in his hand.

“Marianna, I-I’ve had a crush on you for a while now, and just recently I admitted it to myself. It’s so hard to be around you without not wanting to kiss you or tell you how I feel. But now I’ve gathered up the courage to come clean. I guess what I’m trying to say is, will you go out with me?”

My breath was caught in my throat. How could I say no to something I’d wanted for a long time? By now his face was centimetres from mine, eyes searching for an answer.

“It took you long enough,” I breathed out, cupping his cheeks and pulling his lips to my own. Finally, finally I could do this without having to daydream or fantasize. He liked me! He actually liked me! The realization hit hard. Austin Mahone, my best friend since birth, actually felt the same way.

And it seemed real, that was until the loud sound of my phone alarm caused me to shoot up in bed.

“Finally, you’re awake.”

“I just had the weirdest dream.”

“What about?” Austin questioned, letting the covers fall off his muscled torso as he got out of our bed. I tried not to let my eyes linger for long and focused on telling about the dream.

“It was about when we first got together. And you asked me out that night.”

“That was an amazing night.” He laughed, leaning over the mattress to peck my lips softly.

Indeed it was, I thought, a smile on my lips at just the thought.
