Chapter 13 ∣ I'm Not Caring...Am I?
-Keegan
What in the world has gotten into her?
Adrasteia stood there in the center of my room with her hands on her hips, a towel somehow formed around the clothes I'd set out for her to wear. There was this new fire that had kindled in her eyes and it threw me off when she so openly insulted another demon who had come to court. Glad Harlan found it funny because I wasn't exactly sure how to feel at this moment.
"Take that ridiculous thing off," I folded my arms in front of my chest, watching as her eyes narrowed on mine.
"What? You mean the ridiculous and pathetic excuse for 'clothes' you so gracious had offered me?" She arched an eyebrow and then gasped, "Oh, or do you mean this wonderful towel that actually covers my body?"
Where the hell is this attitude coming from?
"Towel. Off. Now," I watched as she glared at me, her clear blue eyes searching to see exactly how serious I was. The thing was, I was dead serious. No one talks to me like this, especially a woman.
Adrasteia shook her head and stomped her foot like a child, "I refuse to."
"Oh really?" I asked, "Why is that? The clothes aren't that bad. What really is making you hide away?"
"Besides the perverted sex demon standing in front of me," she mumbled under her breath and I growled, her eyes shooting up from the ground as she nervously shifted under my gaze, her long light brown hair shielding some of her body.
Adrasteia's arms wrapped around her body, hugging herself as she glanced away. "Stop staring at me," she whispered, some of that fire extinguishing, "I'm not used to someone looking at me like that."
"Like what?" I arched an eyebrow.
"Like that!" She pulled her hands away and waved them at me like it should have been obvious. She continued to hide away from me, her eyes ever staying away from catching mine.
I didn't want to deal with this anymore. She was acting ridiculous. Surely, if not for that asshole of a beloved of hers, someone had to have looked at her with desire. Unless, she really had hidden away all her life, protecting that useless coven and watching her life pass her by. Though immortal, it must have been extremely lonely only able to watch from afar as others went about their lives with some sense of security that she provided.
"I'm only going to say this one last time," her eyes finally met mine and I sighed, "Take the towel off."
She shook her head, no words able to pass her lips as she once again retracted into her shell. Why was she so stubborn about revealing her body? It wasn't like she was naked or anything...she has clothes. If she's ever going to learn her place here, I can't ignore her stubbornness, even if it were brought on in a fleeting moment.
Adrasteia's grip on the towel tightened when I closed the space between us. Taking a handful of the fuzzy dark fabric, I tried to yank it from her body, but she just crashed against my chest. "No," she piped up.
"I am your king and you will do as you are told," I growled, her body shaking slightly.
She whispered under her breath, "You are not my king. The vampire ruler, King Lucca is the only one I will listen to."
I lost it, tired of her backtalk.
"Don't touch me!" She fought back as grabbed both of her wrists, slowly pulling them behind her back. Finally locking them at the small of her back in my left hand, I loosened the towel from the shoulder straps of the halter top underneath. Taking hold of the front of the towel, I stripped it away from her body, throwing it onto the floor as I just glared at her. She gazed back up at me with those clear blue eyes, her chest rising and falling softly.
