I wake up and get ready for the day. I keep thinking about Nickolas, he gave me his number! I keep telling myself that I shouldn't keep my hopes up because he probably has a girlfriend.
I walk downstairs to find that Faye was already up and eating breakfast, surprisingly.
"How are you already up?" I ask her.
"You woke up later than usual. Hey, since its Sunday, Austin has the day off. Wanna learn to surf?" Faye answers.
I blink. Me learn how to surf? "Uh, sure, but don't expect me to be good at it OK?" I reply.
"Sure. Mom's got an art show today so she won't be back until sometime late. I'll tell Austin the news." She types on her phone for a few seconds then puts it in the back pocket of her shorts.
"Let's get you in a bather." She smiled mischievioisly then she dragged me upstairs to my room.
She pulled out a black and mint green 'rash guard'. She also pulled out a black high waisted bikini bottom.
I went into the bathroom and changed. I got out and Faye said, "Rowan! You look so good!"
I smile. "Really?" I didn't feel very pretty.
"Yes! Mint green looks amazing on you!" She grins.
"Heh.. Thanks, I guess." Faye walks off, but soon comes back with a surfboard that has a cartoon-styled sunset on it.
"You will ride on this. I used it when I first learned how a couple years back, it may be too small for you. Hopefully not though." She hands me the board.
"One sec." She runs off into her room and comes back out in a dark grey rash guard and a pale orange bikini bottom, she also has her surf board.
"So do we go now?" I was holding the surfboard very awkwardly. I felt really stupid. Faye nodded.
We walked outside and she gave me a few tips on how to hold the board easier. Once she gave me these pointers it was much easier to carry.
Austin was already there, waiting for us. I instantly got really nervious. I was totally going to mess up. It's going to be so embarrassing!
We finally get to him and I keep a step away from Austin. "So what should we start with?" He asked Faye.
"Hmm.. Maybe paddling? Or balance?" She replies. "Oh! I know!"
She sets her long board on the sand. She then proceeded to teach me how to get up while surfing and how to fall off. Falling off didn't seem that hard.
Then we started surfing. The worst part. Faye and Austin helped me paddle until I was able to catch a wave.
It took me a while to catch a wave, and if I did, I would instantly lose balance or control of the board and fall off.
"Uhhh.. Umm.." I was up but I was losing control of my board fast. Suddenly, the blue ocean devoured me and I wasn't quite sure which was was up. I was slowly sinking unsure of what to do.
All of a sudden a pair of strong arms took me and pulled me upwards. My head was hurting as I was laid onto a board. I started coughing and sputtering.
"I'm sorry." I cough. I think I was being taken ashore. I wasn't sure. I might have passed out.
"Rowan? Are you ok?" A feminine voice from the darkness says. I cough and open my eyes.
I see Faye, Austin, and- oh no. Nickolas. I just embarrassed myself in front of my crush. Way to go, Rowan. You are so stupid.
"W-what happened?" I ask nerviously. I hope I didn't do anything too bad.
"Nickolas actually has been here since you caught your first wave. When he saw you weren't looking so good up on that wave of yours he started paddeling out just in case. Stupidly, Austin and I were talking and didn't notice you were losing control until after you fell." Faye explains.
"So I paddled out and when you fell, I swam after you. I was the one who pulled you up from the depths. Once we resurfaced Austin and I put you on my board and got you to shore." Nickolas continued the story. He saved my life. Probably. I don't know how serious it could have been.
"After you were to shore, I noticed you were dehydrated. Faye got some water for you. She hasn't left your side since. But its only been an hour or two. We have kept you hydrated and look. Now you're fine!" Austin finishes the story.
I blink, still taking it in. "So I'm on Nickolas's surfboard? And you guys took good care of me when I was out. Hmm.." I thought for a moment. "I want to try again."
"You are not trying that again!" Faye says worriedly. I wasn't quite sure what her motives are, but I shrugged that off.
I got up from the surfboard and got the one I was supposed to be using. The one with the cartoony sunset on it. I paddle out, searching for a wave.
A decent wave comes my way. Good looking for a beginner like me. I catch the wave, luckily. I, somehow, kept my balace in place. I rode he wave for like 12 seconds before it died out. I felt so accomplished.
"Oh my gosh! Rowan, you did it! Good job!" Faye congratulates me and hugs me. I look at Austin and he seems happy for me, but also a little disappointed about something.
"Hey, I think you're boyfriend wants to see you. Or atleast give him some attention." I giggle and Faye's face goes red as she pushes away from me. But she does go and see Austin and they hug.
Nickolas walks up to me as I'm admiring the view of Austin and Faye together. "Good job. That was a sweet recovery after your major wipeout. Think you do this some more?" He asks me.
"Maybe.I'm not quite sure yet." I pause. "And Nickolas? Thank you. For saving me. And for letting me rest on your board." I say awkwardly, still very sorry about the whole thing.
"Oh, it's no problem! Maybe I should bring my girlfriend out here and we can surf together." He puts a hand on my shoulder. I blush and put my head down.
"That.. Would be fun!" I lift my head and try my hardest to his the disappointment on my face. Of course he has a girlfriend.
How stupid am I? I look at the sea and sigh. I don't know how but somehow I feel that things might end up going right for me. Probably not, but who knows?
Just to break my train of thought, as we were walking back to the house. An excited Athena raced up to me and jumped on me. We started playing and I ran into the ocean. She ran in after me just fine.
We continued playing like this, and remembering to stay hydrated, until Carol came back home.
"Welcome home, Aunt Carol!" I greet her as a dripping wet Athena bounds up to her to greet her as well.
"Athena!"
