Of course I get laid off a week before the rent is due. It's impossible to keep a job in this town, what with the steadily dropping economy. I had been trying to find another job, but no one was hiring.
"I feel like I always get the worst luck." I groaned, sitting down on my bed with today's newspaper to check out what jobs could be had. It would probably be the same as yesterday, none.
"You know I can't get a job either, right?" The growling voice under my bed asked. "I've never had luck with job interviews..."
"That might be because you're a monster."
"There are jobs for monsters too, y'know. I just can't seem to make a good first impression."
"The trick to a good first impression is to be polite, and greet your interviewer. That generally works in the human world." I mindlessly spouted the information that my mom had told me a million times.
"Okay, I've gotta go. I actually have a job interview. Thanks for the advice." They said, and you heard a rustling as they left.

What the hell?! How were there still no jobs? The rent was due today, and I only had some savings, but not nearly enough for the whole bill. I still hadn't heard from Monster, I could only hope that was because they were hard at work. They had told me that jobs in the monster world were normally temporary, but required constant attendance while they lasted.
Then, there was a knock on the door. Shit.
"Coming." I called, and started walking to my front door. I opened the door, and greeted my landlord as cheerfully as I could. Just like always, he told me that the rent was due at the end of the week. I nodded and smiled, but I knew that unlike the usual, I wouldn't have it paid by tomorrow.
I tossed your rent bill across the room in frustration and it went under my bed. A minute later, a grotesque claw pushes the bill back out with a wad of cash.
"You didn't even tell me that you got a job!" I exclaimed.
"Yeah, well I was kinda busy working. Your tip seemed to do the trick, 'cause I obviously got the job. Best thing is, it's a permanent clerk job, so I'll be bringing home money all the time."
"Thank you so much. I'm trying to get a job, I swear."
"No problem, you paid the rent all by yourself for at least a year now. Then again, you didn't know I was here until six months ago."
