'Carla... Carla wake up.' I stir, and the blackness disappears as I open my eyes.
'Carla... WAKE UP.' I shoot up, banging my head on the backboard of my bed. As I do this, the two girls that have been summoned to get me bolt from my room, screaming and giggling. Of course, they're scared of grumpy Carla.
'Shit.' I curse as I look at my clock, flashing '8:36'. I was supposed to be on breakfast duty six minutes ago. Typical Carla, always late. Sighing, I roll out of my bed, and shove on the pile of clothes I left out last night. The clothes pile consists of a pair of skinny black ripped jeans, a Hat Films shirt, a beanie and my combat boots.
I hastily put a brush through my tangled brown hair and straighten my fringe, then apply a thick coat of eyeliner around my chocolate eyes. 'Done' I whisper, and head downstairs. Before I even enter the room I hear screaming children, running around and laughing.
I enter, and the room goes deathly silent. I see tens and tens of children, all ages, staring at me, looking into my eyes, waiting for something to happen. I walk as fast as I can out of the room, into the kitchen, where Annie and Evelyn, two carers, are waiting for me.
'You're late. I need you to help me with the breakfast and then wash up afterwards.'
'Yes, Evelyn.' I say. The brief exchange of words is normal enough, but I can see that both of the carers discreetly avoid eye contact with me. I don't blame them.
I get to work preparing thirty portions of shreddies, and MY GOD is it boring. Cereals, milk, cereals, milk, cereals, milk. A never ending cycle. When we finally end this torture, I pour out another thirty cups of orange juice, and then we send out the breakfasts. The kids go mental, pulling each other's hair, biting. They're like savages.
In no time at all, the plates start to pile up at the sink, and I start work, washing and drying each individual bowl, which is even more boring than making them. As I work, Annie comes over to me.
'Um... There's going to be a man adopting later. I don't suppose...'
'That I could stay in my room all day? Sure. I don't really do much else anyway.'
'Thanks Carla. I mean it,' Annie says, fixing her dirty blonde bun and smiling gently. 'Just know that it's not my decision.' She sighs sadly and puts a hand on my shoulder.
I shrug. 'I know. Thanks anyway.'
As I leave, she passes me a handful of Chocolate biscuits. 'Shh. Don't tell Evelyn.' She giggles.
I press my finger to my lips, give her a sly smile and race up the stairs, down the twisting corridor and into my room. I take out my sketchpad and pencils, then draw some comic strips based on the old Yogscast Tekkit series and Blackrock. I don't have many good pencils or paper, so it's not perfect, but I draw and edit until I'm happy with it. In the background, I play 'All the Lights in the Sky' and 'Danger Days' and generally just do random trash.
Whilst I draw, I gasp as I get a vision. It's of a man's voice, and I'm looking out of a window, which I assume to be of a car. The voice says 'I hope you like Jaffa cakes.'. Trust me, I have no idea what it means. The source of my visions can happen at anytime. I've had them happen the next day, the next week, even the next year.
So I ignore it. I go back to my drawing and miming along to 'Holmunculus', and then pretend it never happened.

About an hour later, there's a knock on my door.

Hey wolf friends,
I hope you enjoyed the first official chapter of my new book. Now is the chance you get to start sending in some basic character ideas to play basic parts, like Carla's school buddies that she is soon to make. Just comment your ideas at any point of the story and I'll try to add them in. There will be more opportunities later in the book for larger parts too, so just watch out.
