629 Days Before.
I closed my locker and turned to my friends. They stood in a large circle laughing and talking loudly. I smiled when Richelle invited me over next to her. Josh and Zach announced that they'd found we were going to have a new boy joining our class tomorrow.
"What's his name?" Fallon asked, her brown eyes sparked with curiosity.
"I dont know. Jayla! Sam, Olivia, Fallon, Zach and I are all going to play Pokémon Go tonight, did you want to join us?" It was Rylen who spoke up this time.
"I don't think so. I'm going to study hard for the math test tomorrow." I replied.
"Oh c'mon, we all know your gonna ace that test, it's just one night!" Complained Sam. Richelle always tells me that Sam has a thing for me and sometimes I start to believe her, but then I remember that she once thought Jace had a crush on her - Jace is gay.
"I'll pass, thanks for the offer though." I looked at the ground and slightly shrugged my shoulders.
"Ugh, you guys are so boring! Can we talk about Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston? This news story says he might propose soon!" The group collectively rolled their eyes at Rylee's comment.
The bell rang and I headed to my AP Physics class, it was my last class of the day and I couldn't wait for it to end.
...
The last bell finally rang and I hurriedly stood and rushed to the office.
"Hi sweetie!" My mom yelled from her office.
I waved at her as I grabbed a donut from the counter. When I walked in I saw a boy and his mother sitting at the desk. The first thing I noticed about the boy were his eyes, they were a beautiful dark blue that seemed to flow deeper than the ocean. The second thing I noticed was his smile, it was bright and filled his face with joy; it was infectious and I could already feel a smile forming on my own face. The third thing was his wheelchair; the one thing that felt as if it might ruin him, but it made every little thing about him better. It made every little detail of him so much more important.
"Jayla, this is Nancy and her son Delias. He is enrolling her as a student, he's going to be in your class."
"Nice to meet you, Jayla." Nancy held out her hand for me to shake.
"Nice to meet you to Ms....."
She chuckled softly, "Scott. You're so sweet, just call me Nancy."
I turned to Delias again and his smile was plastered back on his face. I couldn't take my eyes off of him. It felt as if I had to take in every single aspect of his face; his eyes, his nose, his mouth, his hair - everything.
"Jayla? There should be some papers on the printer in the library. Could you grab them for me?" My mom asked.
"Sure!" I took a giant bite of my donut and dropped my bag off by my chair before I left.
I headed to the library, the sticky donut in my hand. I figured I would have to finish off the donut and wash my hands before I went and got sticky donut glaze all over my mother's papers. So I made a quick turn for the bathroom, finished my donut in four large bites and washed my hands. Then I made way way to the library, where I found a quite large stack of papers on the printer. I grabbed them and left, back on my way to the office.
"What took you so long?" My mother asked when I sat down in my chair.
"Sorry, there was a problem with some sticky donut goo."
My mother smiled and glanced through the papers, "thank you, sweetie."
My phone buzzed and lit up with a text from Rylee: 'OMG! Richelle and Zach are a couple!!!! <3' I smiled and put my phone down without replying.
"Okay! Looks like your all set! You can go start filling your locker and finding where all your classes are." My mother said. Nancy started to stand but my mother placed her hand on Nancy's arm, "Actually, can you stay here a little while longer? Jayla can help Delais. Right, Jayla?"
"What? Oh, yeah definitely!" I stood and followed Delias, who was already outside looking for his locker, "Need some help?" I asked sweetly.
"Please, I have no idea where the hell I'm supposed to go." Delias turned himself around and stared at the paper in his hand with frustration.
"Okay, let's see." I said as Delias handed me the sheet of paper, "It looks like you are just down this hall."
"Thanks." We walked, well I walked, down the hall in an uncomfortable silence. We filled Delias' locker without saying anything and headed back to the office.
"Thank you very much." I heard Delias' mother say from the office.
"No problem, I'm sure Jayla will be looking out for Delias."
Nancy left he office and smiled as she saw Delias and me. I smiled back at her and walked into my mom's office.
"What a sweet family." My mother said as she tidied up her desk.
"Yeah..." I opened my backpack, grabbed my headphones, played some music and began to study.
