Chapter Seven
The forest was thick with fog, I was slipping over slick stones and tree roots. There was no path as I pushed my way through blackberry bushes. The heavy rain mixed with the tears streaming down my cheeks and dripping off my chin; there was no reason to wipe them away.
There's no reason for me to get my parents back- my family back. I will just somehow screw up and get them faded out; hopefully they will take me with them.
There's also no reason to purposely cause my grandpa's suffering, he will suffer his entire life. Why make him suffer?
In the distance, I can hear someone calling my name. The chances are it's Mathias so I ignore it. He made it clear that I'm a screw up and this is why my family is gone.
"Brooke!" This time the voice is clearer, more friendly.
Everest.
I turn around, he's pushing his way through the tree branches to find me. His hood is down, his brown hair is pushed against his forehead.
"What the heck do you think you're doing?" He wiped rain out of his eyes and reached for me.
I closed my fingers around his and pulled him out of the bushes. His arms automatically went around me and pulled me close.
Shame burned at my chest and I sobbed into his wet rain coat, my fingers knotted in the wet fabric.
"What's wrong? What happened?" He whispered and used his thumb to wipe the tears off my cheeks.
"You deserve your family more than me," I sobbed and pushed myself out of his arms. "I'll just ruin everything."
"What?" He gasped and reached for my hand again. "You can't come this far only to give up."
I sobbed again, this time it hurt my chest. Everest tugged on my hand to bring me back to reality.
"Brooke, come here," he pulled me toward his open arms.
I felt guilty as I was engulfed in his arms, I have caused his pain and suffering. Mine will be over if I walk back to the road. His won't be over.
"Wanna go get your family back?" He whispered and looked down at me.
I shook my head and hid my face again, "you need to go get yours."
"Brooke, no," he said and made me look up at him. "You deserve this, you've came this far. You're so close. Do this for your family, please Brooke."
The rain wasn't going to let up, making it impossible for me to keep my eyes open and look up at him at the same time.
"Ev', no. Your family is still here, you have a chance," I bent my head and shook it. "Please, just let me live here. I like 1962."
"You know, I was gonna ask you a question after all of this, but I guess it works now," he blushed and turned to look to the right of me.
"What is it?" I took this time to wipe the rain and tears off of my face.
"I wanted to ask you if you... ah never mind," he turned around and rubbed his face.
"Ev', what is it?" I placed my hand on the back of his shoulder.
"Ah, screw it," he mumbled.
He quickly turned around and wrapped his arms around me. Warm, wet lips touched mine. His hands slid to my waist and knotted his fingers in the fabric of my soaked skirt.
Everest was kissing me.
It was my first one, I didn't know how to react. I could feel heat blooming in my chest; warming me from head to toe.
Everest's lips tasted like mint toothpaste and smelled like old spice. Somehow that combination worked. It was overwhelming.
The rain and the cold melted away, leaving only a warm fuzzy sensation in my stomach.
Everest pulled away, my lips were wet from his and I felt the sudden urge to wipe it off. But I didn't.
"Everest," I grinned and slipped my arms around his neck.
"I was gonna ask you to be my girl," he mumbled. "But I guess that's a yes. Now can you come back to the road?"
I nodded, slipped my fingers through his and set off walking back to the road.

I watched in horror as my grandpa's ford was thrown into the air, rolled and skitter to a stop. Micah Kyle's body was slammed onto the wet pavement. His head hit first with a sickening crack, then the rest of his body fallowed. He wasn't moving.
Before anyone could stop me, I ran out to where Grandpa was. I was sobbing, he looked so young and carefree. His eyes were closed, a cut on his forehead made blood trickle down his wet face and curl over his nose. His hair was plastered to his forehead, his baseball uniform was soaked with rain and blood. Now he was bleeding out of the back of his head.
I lifted his head into my lap and brushed back his matted hair. His blood soaked onto my raincoat.
"Call an ambulance!" I screamed at Mathias and it ended with sobs.
Mathias flashed out, Everest knelt down next to me; fear was in his eyes. "Is he alive?"
I nodded and bit my lip to keep from screaming. "Hi-s head-d is still ble-eding."
Everest pressed his hand onto the back of Grandpa's head, blood seeped out through his fingers and onto his raincoat.
"Come on, we've gotta go," Mathias said and flashed back. "Brooke! Come on!"
"Wait!" I screamed hysterically, "I'll leave when I can hear an ambulance!" Tears streamed down my face, some into my mouth but others dripped off my chin.
Xandra looked at Mathias and nodded, he wrung his hands nervously. "Okay, they're five minutes out."
I continued to cradle my grandpa's head while Everest put pressure on the bleeding. We were covered in his blood. Rain continued to pour.
After what seemed like forever, I could hear faint siren's in the distance. Everest let go of Grandpa's head. Blood pumped out faster.
"Brooke," he said and slowly stood up. "We've got to go. Come on."
I sobbed until Everest had to pull me to my feet, Xandra linked arms with Mathias, who linked arms with Everest who linked arms with me.
Then all I saw was white.

Xandra had taken us back to the 'home office', later I had learned that it was called TTFAF(Time Travelers Fighting Against the Fading). Mathias didn't like the name so that's why he called it the 'home office'.
Everest and I were both covered in blood, we were given a fresh set of modern clothes and a room to shower in.
The water pressure was luxury, I stood for the longest time under the hot water. I loved pulling on jeans and a t-shirt.
Everest was talking to Mathias as I walked out of the room, they both turned to look at me, their expression made me nervous.
"What?" I asked quietly and knotted my hands together.
"Uh, we just got word," Mathias said and paused. The pause was too long. Dangerously too long, bad news long.
My heart dropped to the bottom of my stomach, "what? What happened?"
"Your family is back," Mathias said finally, then he smiled.
I rushed towards Mathias and threw my arms around him, he hugged me back as I cried in happiness.
Then I turned towards Everest. He opened his arms, I grinned and wrapped my arms around his torso.
I don't think I'll ever be this happy again.
