The Problem

"What. Did you. JUST DO?!" someone yells at me. I guiltily hang my head down. I had just dropped some sauce on her dress.

"Sorr-"

"Save it." she yells. The girl turns to her friends. "She's such a klutz!" the girl murmurs.

"Yeah, such a nothing!" one person agrees. Ugh. She's one of those people. Those "popular" people with groups following them and worshipping the ground she walks on. But I can't disagree with them. I am a klutz! I'm a nothing. Nobody worships the ground I walk on. No one follows me around. Well, I guess that's a good thing. It would get annoying. I slouch down and walk out the school. Yup, it's lunch time and I'm already out of school. Well, it's kind of against the rules, but I would do anything  to run away from this cruel world, known as "middle school".

"Gotta get out. Gotta get out!" I murmur to myself. I hop on my bike and pedal home.

"Home early?" my brother, Adam, asks.

"Yeah. Um, there was a fire alarm or something that went off so they sent us home."

"Mm hm!" he says. He was cutting up some apples. I catch his gaze.

"What?" I ask him.

"Nothing!" he replies. "What did you do at school today?"

"Do you really think anything different would happen?"

"Well, you did say that an alarm 'or something' went off today!" Ugh. I have to cover up now. But it was too late. "Meghan! Did you run away from school today?! AGAIN?!" Adam yells.

"YES! But what was I supposed to do?! Slowly die from boredom and insults?!" I yelled back.

"WELL YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO DEAL WITH THAT. YOU CAN'T RUN AWAY FROM YOUR PROBLEMS! Trust me. I tried." I tried thinking of something to say.

"WELL MAYBE IF YOU KNEW-"

"Oh, trust me. I KNOW!" Adam yelled back. He slammed the knife on the counter. Adam saw my face. He calmed down. "Meghan. If you don't do this, your life will become HORRIBLE. Your life will become like...like...mom's."

"What?" I ask. I felt like I've been punched in the stomach. How would mom's life be horrible? There are no mean girls where she works!

He started to wash the knife and his hands. "Mom always has to work late every day and night to keep us safe and alive. She has to put up her *word I will not use* of a boss every. Day. And. Night. That's because she did the same thing as you're doing right now." I felt so dumb. HOW did I not notice?! I'm SUCH an idiot!

"Bu-but what about the insults? The mean people? I feel like such a NOTHING at school!" Adam grabbed my shoulders. His hands were wet.

"We carry within us the wonders we seek around us." Adam said. I was trying to tell if he was joking, but no. He was looking straight at me, right into my eyes.

"You're joking? What language is that? Quotian?" I laughed. "He-no? No? Ok. But what does that MEAN?" I ask.

"You're looking for something, but you already have that 'something' inside you." Um...

"I'm not looking for anything!" I pause. "Am I?"

"You're looking for comfort. A way to run from your problems."

"How do have that within me?" I ask.

"You have a way you can run from your problems."

"And that is..."

"Face them." he said.

"Oh, thats hogwash!" I say, and I go to my room.

"Suit yourself!" Adam yelled from the living room. "But one day I'll tell ya I told ya so!" That night, I was laying in bed, thinking about what he said. Face your problems. Those three words kept on finding its way into my head.

The next morning, I was still thinking about what Adam said. "Face your problems." I repeated. I smiled. "Maybe I will!"
