I knew I was adopted from the start, but I have never thought I'd actually meet the parents that put me on this earth.

"I- uh," I said as I tried to process everything.

"It's okay Hazel, I know it's a lot to take in." Megan told me as she reached out and touched my hand. "I'm so happy we finally got to meet you."

"You've grown into a beautiful young lady," Brian smiled sadly.

I looked over to Riley and gave her a thankful smile. "You're an amazing sister, you know that?"

My sister's arm went around my waist. "I got to meet my parents, I thought you should have the opportunity to meet yours, too." She said, making me tear up.

"Ugh, I hate you guys for making me cry." I felt a couple more tears rush down my cheeks.

"I think this would be an awesome family photo op, don't you think?" Christian suggested.

I wiped my face, probably smearing some makeup in the process. I let out a chuckle as Megan and Brian awkwardly posed behind me, then all of a sudden our friends decided to pop into the picture while the camera was put in timer.

What an 18th birthday, I thought to myself as I smiled and the camera flashed.

--

I was sitting alone on the patio when I heard the front door open.

"Now what is the beautiful birthday girl doing out here all alone?" Christian had asked, leaning against the railing after hanging me my favorite cherry soda.

I chuckled. "Just thinking," I answered.

"Understood. I don't know what I'd do if I was in your position."

"It's a lot to process, Chris."

He nodded. "Hazel, did you legitimately forget what today was?"

"Well," I chuckled, "until I got back here I had zero clue of what was going on."

My best friend placed his hand over his heart in fake surprise. "Did Hazel Marks really forget the day of her eighteenth birthday?"

"You are quite right, my good sir." I laughed.

"Well, here's cheers to many more." We clanked our soda cans together. "Oh, and Hazel Joy?"

"Yeah?" I turned to meet Christian's eyes.

He smiled. "Happy birthday."
