What if you could start all over?
What if you could meet the people you knew all over.
What if you could change choices you made?
What if you could learn from your mistakes and build a life from new?
what if you could fake it while other people believed your were beginning again?
I woke up in a white room with the smell of disinfectant and latex gloves. My eyes felt heavy and i felt weak but I was aware of everything going on. I pulled myself up to sit and look around.
My sister was asleep in a chair next to me and I realized I was in a hospital.
I reached over and poked her in the arm and she jumped.
"Melanie?!" Her eyes had bags under them and her face was pale. She looked like she hadn't slept in days. "Hey doctor! She's awake!"
"Whoa wait what happened? Why am I here?" I asked rubbing my eyes.
"You don't remember?" I shook my head while my sisters hand came up to her mouth in shock.
i raised an eyebrow. "Your name is Melanie... I'm your sister. You were in an accident." She sat down in her chair again and held my hand. "The doctor said this could happen. You took a hit to the head. You lost your memory."
I felt fine and felt the memories coming back about the car ride home from after school parent teacher conferences and a truck crashing into our car. I remembered the lights and the doctors running while pulling me along on a bed. Everything was vivid and I felt fine although I had a pain in my head. I looked at my sister whose eyes were watering.
Suddenly I asked, "What day is it?"
"It's November 15th."
I fell back into my bed remembering I had to work on a project and hand in an idea for my year long study in research class.
The doctor walked in at that moment. He was tall and handsome with hair slicked back. Thick framed black glasses framed his chiseled face and brought out the green in his eyes. "Hello Melanie. How are you feeling?"
I shrugged. I couldn't really complain. I mean I had a headache but I was sure it was because of the accident. I looked around the room a little bit because I felt uncomfortable feeling like the Doctor was just staring at me. Sure he was a doctor but it still felt weird. I felt conscious that I was wearing a hospital gown. I felt under the sheets realizing that under the gown I was only in a pair of undies and nothing else. I felt my face flush red and forced myself to stare at the crease in the sheets near my feet.
"Melanie. I need you to answer a few questions for me." He said slowly sitting on a swivel chair and coming to the side of my bed next to my sister.
He held up a few pictures that I didn't remember right away.
"Do you remember this picture?" He held a picture of me on a swing and I shook my head. I recognized the clothes but never remembered taking that picture.
He cleared his throat. "I'm afraid my hypothesis is right. It seems to me you may have lost your memory.
I looked at him for a second and let it finally sink in. People believed that I had lost my memory.
It was in the one second that I decided I would play along.
