CHAPTER 1
__________
I didn’t know where I was. It hurt all over, that was the only thing I was sure of. I wasn’t even sure if I was alive. I couldn’t open my eyes and I couldn’t move. A light sweat had started to form on my brow and my eyes moved beneath my eye lids. My lips were parted and my breathing was shallow. Slowly but surely, things were coming back into focus.
I could hear the slow tick of a clock and the buzz of a light overhead. It smelt of nothing, or I’d lost my sense of smell. No, because I could faintly smell my own body odor. The room didn’t smell at all. The comforter was warm against my skin but the pillow was a bit lumpy. I could still feel the pain, mainly behind my eyes, but it was going away slowly. My mouth tasted of metal, iron; blood. But I could already tell there was none of the hot substance in my mouth. Only the after taste.
What happened to me?
Wait, who was me?
The thought filtered through my head and made me gasp and sit up, flinging my eyes open. I squinted for a few seconds, waiting for the pain of the bright light to go away. My eyes widened almost involuntarily and I looked around feverishly.
Who am I?
The thought bounced around my painfully empty mind as I gaped at the thought. I didn’t know. Suddenly my once empty mind was flooded with questions that any normal person would know.
Who was I?
Where was I?
How old was I?
What do I look like?
Who are my family?
What gender am I?
I looked down when I thought of the last question. Well, I was a boy unless I was an extremely flat girl. I looked down at my pants, yeah I was a boy. I was wearing a plain white singlet top ad baggy grey tracksuit pants. I looked at my hands, thin, long fingers and tanned skin; no tan line, kind of Hispanic looking. I was skinny and as my eyes trailed up my arm, I froze. Burn marks trailed up my arm, wrapping around my upper arm and my shoulder. I checked the rest of my body in panic, no other burn marks.
What had happened?!
I felt my face as I tried to examine myself. Thick eyebrows, long, shoulder length hair, I took a strand and pulled it in front of my face; a bit darker than my skin; a bid darker than milk chocolate. My nose was straight and small and I felt something metal around it; a nose ring. My bottom lip was bigger than my top lip, my chin wasn’t too big and my face was narrow. I assumed my eyes were the same color as my hair since I looked Hispanic.
The room I was in had cream walls and no windows. It was relatively small, but I didn’t feel claustrophobic. There was a chair on my right and a small bed side table on my left. I was grateful to see a glass of water next to me. I took it with a shaky hand. I put the cool glass to my lips and drank. After a couple of seconds my eyes flew open again and I spat the water out. It was disgusting and didn’t taste at all like water! After closer inspection I realized it had a slight murky look to it and smelt like medicine. This made me question my whereabouts even more.
I shot back in bed when I heard the jiggle of the door knob. I pretended I was still asleep and lay in the same position I had been when I first woke up and closed my eyes just in time for the door to open.
I heard shuffling, the fiddling of a zipper and heavy breathing. The person sat down on the chair. “I’m so sorry.” The person spoke. It was a boy. I heard the sound of fingers running through hair. The voice was masculine, deep and full of guilt. “I didn’t mean to I swear.” His voice cracked and his breath caught. I could safely say that this was obviously the person who put me in this bed and made me feel like shit.
