Today is marking the second month I’ve been living with Jake. I soon learned the ways of living with him. It’s quite fun, actually. I’ve come to like Jake. I mean, what’s not to like about him?
So we’ve had multiple conflicts with the walkers. There was one that found its way into the rink while we were both sleeping. Jake and I quickly solved that problem. But it won’t last forever. Fixing these problems. I’m just hoping Jacob knows that we might need to find a new home soon. I’m not sure I’d get him to leave the rink. Not soon at least. It’s not only his decision anymore.
On one run out to get some food, we had found another living human. Her name was Alyssa, and it turns out that we had went to school together. She’s more oblivious than a squirrel in rush-hour.
I had second guessed myself and I had went into an unchecked hallway, without any weapons. Whoopdy-fucking-doo. I hadn’t expected to see much, since we blocked all the windows and doors with hockey sticks and tables and stuff.
As soon as I opened the door, at least twenty walkers came hurtling towards me.
“HOLY SHIT!!!” I screamed and made a U-Turn right back to the rink. But my curious mind caused me to take the most obstacle filled hallway. So, I’m jumping over sticks, bodies, bikes, tables, and so much shit that slowed me down just enough for one walker to grab my leg and trip me. I turned and kicked it and I hauled ass back to the rink.
I turned another corner and god damn POP COMES THE WALKER. Where the fuck do these things keep coming from?! I tumbled over my own feet and tripped. My arms were spread across luggage and a walker managed to step full weight on it.
That sound. It was terrifying, my own bones snapping. I could feel it. Oh Shit Fire did I feel it. I couldn’t help but scream so loud. Hopefully I screamed enough for the two to hear me. A walker had fallen on me and ripped at my pants. Trying to get to my flesh, its dinner.
I lay my head back and screamed in pain. Then I felt something digging into my hip. I felt and it was… my knife!! I grabbed it and – not full strength – I stabbed the walker’s head. I saw the rest of the herd and I got up. I ran.
“Jake! Alyssa!” I kept calling. We need guns. Not knives! It was our official last resort.
Just my luck, Jake and Alyssa came to my rescue with guns. They began to fire, quite quickly. I stood for not a single minute. I hauled ass to the rink. I went to the medical supplies and checked for any bites. I grabbed some hockey sticks – broken to size – and I taped them to my broken arm and I overdosed on pain medicine.
After I had heard the last gun shot, I looked up expecting to see a furious Jacob standing there with his arms crossed. But I saw a concerned Alyssa, I tilted my head and looked around for Jacob, my heart stopping for a mere second.
“He said he needed to take a walk. To process this.” Alyssa said. I nodded and thought for a good moment.
“Start packing up. Only what we NEED.” I made sure I was clear on what we NEED. I stood up and walked off looking for Jake. I went down the hallway I was in. This time, with a knife on hand. I stood there looking at the corpses.
“You’re lucky I was able to hear you…” I heard Jake and I turned around.
“Yeah, I don’t know how to repay you!” I looked at the ground and almost broke down crying. Jake walked right up to me, cupped my face in his, and kissed me.
It caught me by surprise, but I kissed him back. It made me feel warm, made me feel at home. My eyes were still closed when he pulled away.
“Payment repaid.” He smirked and kissed my forehead. He lightly caressed my cheek and looked down at my arm.
“How’re you feeling?” He asked me. I hadn’t really cared about my arm at that moment.
“It’s fine.” I said. “Come on. We got to pack up and get out of here.” I add and walk off, but Jacob catches up and entwines my hand in with his. It put quite the smile on my face.
“Where do we go now?” He asked and nudged my arm. He left a trail of warmth…
“I don’t know… maybe we could deeper into the city?” I said. I felt Jake was rubbing his thumb across my hand. It felt good.
“We’d have to move fast and quiet through the city. Find one spot to go to, and stick with it.” Jake’s voice was quite serious. I closed my eyes to get a good picture of what I remember about Boston.
“I remember passing by a library, grocery store, and a few other big buildings. I think one was a chemistry university.” I said, kind of happy I said that.
“We’ll see, which ever works best for us.” Jake said and stopped us in front of the door to the rink. Alyssa was just about done packing.
“This is just like a real life horror movie.” Jake said after he cleared his throat. I nodded in agreement.
“I thought that the first day.” I added with a slight laugh. I don’t know why I was laughing, probably just because we’ve actually survived this long.
“This probably won’t be the only time we’ve survived the end of the world.” Jake said and I rolled my eyes. I could see Alyssa packing some bags.
I let go of Jake’s hand and walked down the bleachers to Alyssa, seems like she could use some help. She didn’t look at me for quite a while, then she just gave me the death glare. I tilted my head in curiosity.
“What took you so long?” She barked. I couldn’t help but glance at Jacob, and he smiled at me causing me to smile back. That’s when I was able to gladly admit that I liked Jacob. I’m 100% sure I like him.
“We got caught up in a conversation.” I said and helped her with packing. She rolled her eyes at me and continued.
“We’ll take one bag. Alyssa and I will take two visible weapons. Coney, you can take an ax and a pocket knife. We’re not staying another night.” Jake made sure that we knew.
