WARNING: CONTAINS SMUT

“Tiff!” Your mother shouts from the kitchen. “Can you answer the door?”

“Okay,” You reply, muting the TV and getting up from the sofa.  You go the front door and open it to find Joyce Barakat standing there. “Mrs B! How are you?”

She smiles warmly. “Oh, I’m fine, thanks, Tiff. Is school going well?” You nod and she carries on. “Anyways, I was here to see you, actually. Well, I know you’ve got a dog and we’re away for a week, so I was wondering if you could walk our dog as well? We leave the day after tomorrow,”

“Sure!” You agree, smiling. You loved walking your dog, especially in the evenings.

“Thanks, Tiff,” She says. “We’ll pay you and everything.”

“It’s no problem, really,” You reassure her. “Hope you have a nice holiday,”

She waves at you before walking back down the pathway towards her own house.  You smile and wave back before shutting the door and going back inside.

“Who was that?” Your mum calls.

“Joyce Barakat,” You tell her as you walk into the kitchen. “She and her family are going away and she wants me to walk their dog while they’re on holiday,”

“That’s nice,” Your mum smiles.

“Yeah,” You agree.

Two days later at 9am, you let yourself into the Barakats’ house with the key that Joyce gave you a day earlier. Their dog, a brown Collie, Baxter, bounds up to you and barks playfully.

“Hi, Baxter!” You laugh, ruffling behind his ears. He barks at your affection and licks your palms. “Are you ready for a walk?”

Putting on his lead, you walk both Baxter and your own dog around the neighbourhood, both of them tugging at their leads and being overly playful to every person you saw on your route. Despite being overly playful, Baxter is friendly and does everything you tell him to, as well as getting along with your dog.

Within an hour, both dogs are panting for water and it’s already starting to get almost too warm for the dogs to be out. You walk Baxter back to the Barakats’ house and let him in, where he instantly starts gulping down water from his water bowl. You ruffle behind his ears, fill up his food bowl and make sure he has enough food for the day.

When you let yourself back into the house, a voice stops you.

“How the hell did you get a key for my house?”

Your breath catches in your throat and you see a tall, skinny boy standing in the doorway. Your heart pounds in your chest and you sigh deeply when you realise who it is. “Jack. Why aren’t you with your family?”

You’d moved over to Baltimore when you were five and Jack was the first and only person to befriend you. The pair of you had pretty much been inseparable until you started high school, which is when he found Alex, Zack and Rian. You’d found your own group of friends in time, but part of you still felt a little bit betrayed that Jack had left you. There was so much history between you that he’d somehow forgotten. The time that he’d shared a bed with you when you were younger and staying round each-other’s houses because you were scared of the dark; the evenings spent running through the neighbourhood, pretending to be battling dragons and trolls; how excited you both were when you found out you were both getting dogs, everything seemingly gone within a couple of years.

“I didn’t feel like going. Anyways, what are you doing in my house?” He says.

“Your mum asked me to walk Baxter,” You say shyly, shifting your weight from foot to foot. “You can always walk him in you want, I mean, if you’re not comfortable with me being in your house,”
