Don't ask me how it happened, because I wouldn't be able to give you an answer.
The drinking, the parties, the ever growing suspicion that something wrong was going on . . . but I never questioned anything, at least, not until it was too late.
See, if I could ask him now, he'd probably blame it on me, he'd scream and shout and cry and throw things and put on a big dramatic show about how I, I had been the one who drove him to do what he had done.
. . . and me? I would shake my head and give him a small little smile, because at the end of the day he wasn't the one who had gotten his heart trodden on.
