"Now I want you to be on your best behavior when I'm out on this mission alright? Lucio, Hana, and Zenyatta will be here, and I know you're not one to cause a ruckus, but for fatherly means, keep it down."
"Is it alright if I talk to Mr.Lucio? I'm a big fan of his and I'd like him to sign somethin' for me." Markus held the edge of his cot in excitement.
"As long as he isn't too busy, go on ahead." McCree smiled and put on his hat, hesitant to leave. "Are you sure you'll be okay?"
"I'm sure Mr.McCree." Just promise not to kill anyone like the news said you have. Just show me you're different. "Be careful."
"I will be."
It was lonely without Bastion to read to. He worried about him from time to time, hoping that he was okay wherever he was. Markus was allowed to know when missions were, but never where, why, or what they were for.
Zenyatta was good to sit next to, but he couldn't help but feel like he was studying him, as if he was curious as to what made him tick.
Sitting in one of the common rooms one day, he decided to look at some of the games that Hana left out the day before, only to find that he couldn't read the covers. They were in Korean. Markus hadn't been one for video games back at home, he was more of the outdoorsy type, but seeing that they just happened to lying around, he may as well look.
"Have you played those before?"
He jumped at the sound of her voice. Did no one ever announce their presence?
"No ma'am, never in my life. Couldn't quite get a good system in Arizona." He avoided her gaze "but I did appreciate watchin' you on my laptop from time to time. You're very good at playin these sort of games."
"What kind of games do you like?"
"I like to play soccer and other sports. Sometimes I like to watch hockey."
"Hm, let's go to Lucio. He likes hockey too."
Markus could feel his palms sweat when they neared his room. He loved to listen to Lucio's music. It was a ritual. On saturdays and sundays, when Grandpa was done listening to his traditional songs, Mom would get her old online radio and play some of the techno music from when she was young and then she would play Lucio's music just a bit louder. She said it healed her a bit. Made her head feel better when she had migraines. And now he was going to just wander up to Lucio's room and talk to him about hockey. It felt like a dream.
"Lucio! Open up! McCree's kid wants to hang out with us!" Hana let her fist on the door a few times.
"You can call me Alvaros if you'd like Ms.Song." he might as well wear a nametag so people would stop saying "McCree's kid."
Lucio opened up the door and markus swore that his heart stopped then and there. He didn't know what to say, he didn't know what to think, what to do, he was just frozen. It just happened so fast. Once he opened the door, it seemed like all the memories of Mom and Grandpa in their little kitchen came back at once. The smell of chorizo and eggs, with Mom's homemade tortillas in the morning, Grandpa wiping his hands as he went out the door with breakfast in hand, it all passed through his mind so quickly that he couldn't stop the tears falling.
"Hana, I think I'm gonna talk to him for a bit."
"Yeah...I think he needs it."
Lucio led him into the room, letting him sit on an office chair, one of those with wheels. Markus did his best to wipe his tears and mentally scolded himself for crying. He heard one of Lucio's songs start up as the musician himself sang quietly "When the music hits you feel no, pain.""I'm sorry for that Mr.Lucio. I didn't mean to get all teary on you."
"Don't worry kiddo. I know it happens out of the blue. It can be emotional to see somethin' that reminds you of something else." He sat on the bed opposite the desk.
"Your music made my mom feel better a lot before she passed away. We used to listen on saturdays and sundays in the morning." He gripped the handkerchief.
"That's good! I want my music to heal. I'm glad that it did it's job."
"You can call me Markus if you'd like Mr.Lucio. I look up to you a great deal and that's why I'd like to be a veterinarian when I'm older."
"That's great! I'm glad I could wake something up inside of you. Something that makes you want to heal." Lucio smiled widely.
"Is Hana your friend?"
"Yeah.""Good."
Later in the evening, Hana made them some food, Zenyatta joined them for the meal although he didn't say much. Hana and Lucio started to play their games, Mark watching.
He cried silently in the background, hoping that this good time would last forever.
