2.
2 months after the scene we just witnessed, Mrs. Lovett and Sweeney had finally been able to dispose of all evidence of their previous “business” and covered their tracks for good. They burned the last of the bodies and as far as the judge was concerned, they planted his body in his home and framed the Beadle (of all people!) for his murder; who was swiftly arrested and put behind bars.
They felt it best to wait to arrange their nuptials until after they were sure no trace of evidence could lead anyone to them.
As far as money went, Sweeney continued his barber shop and Mrs. Lovett her pie shop, excepting the fact that instead of slitting the men’s throats, Sweeney simply gave them the closest shave they ever had. Since the money from his barber shop was not enough to support them both, they worked a system where the money Sweeney made barbering bought actual beef for Mrs. Lovett’s meat pies, since Mrs. Lovett’s pies made a great deal more money.
Sweeney had adopted a kinder attitude toward Toby, however, neither of them really cared for one another, but they could at least get along without spite.
Although, they could not afford to live by the seaside like Mrs. Lovett dreamed, they could get by.
Mrs. Lovett explained everything in an entry she made in her diary: “Dear Diary,
‘e seems to be proper turned around ‘e does! E’s so carin’ and gentle and ‘e says that ‘e he wants to wed within the next month!
Finally all me dreams are comin’ along! We can’t move by the sea and live in a proper home like I ‘ad wished, but we are getting by just fine ‘ere! No more are we killin’ and choppin’ up them filthy rotting corpses; we got a proper respectable business now with nothing to ‘ide. Toby and Mr. T seem to be finally getting on like proper gentlemen. Nothin puts me heart in more of a joyous flutter then when me boys exchange pleasantries.
All seems well.”
And precisely 1 month after Mrs. Lovetts diary entry she and Sweeney Todd were married. The wedding was merely a private exchange of vows in an empty church with only the pastor (and of course Toby) Sweeney and Nellie present. It was just like Mrs. Lovetts “By the Sea” wedding vision come to life. But instead of going to live far away from the filthy city in a clean, pretty cottage by the sea with a white picket fence, Mr. Todd carried Mrs. Lovett over the threshold of her grimy pie shop. But, Mrs. Lovett didn’t mind, she was with Sweeney and he loved her and she loved him.
And that night…her undying passion for him was equally requited.
To be continued! xoxo The next chapter will be explain everything;) So stay tuned!
