Was she dead?
The ground felt nice, leaves and damp earth. She had always loved that smell, fresh, clean. "Hey guys, she's waking up" A face peered down at her, waving slightly, no wait, that was the trees overhead, swaying in the light breeze. She blinked a few times, taking in the bright daylight. They were on the side of the highway, which was oddly deserted. A man in a red hoodie was in the middle of the road, moving his arms about rapidly and dashing from side to side. "Why is there no signal" He cried frustrated. "Hey Vanoss, sit down before you collapse" Cartoonz shouted, the loudness hurting her ears. "You okay?" Delirious was sat beside her, peering anxiously.
"I think so..." Her head hurt.
"I thought you were dead. Your head is bleedin'" she dug out her phone and looked at her reflection. Jesus. Hair sticking out wildly, dried blood stuck to the left side of her face from where her head had struck the window. "I had to carry you up here" SO it hadn't been the hand of God.
"Um...I'm sorry" Close up he was kinda cute. Short cropped black hair and kind brown eyes. And here she was looking like a walking corpse. "Where's the driver?" He shook his head sadly. "Oh..."
"What about the other people on the bus?"
"A lot of them have gone walking for Halp"
"For...Halp?"
"S'what I said" she giggled, a mixture of nerves and adrenaline.
"You mean help?" His eyes narrowed humorously, a corner of his mouth turning up.
"What's your name?"
She opened her mouth, then caught herself. She didn't go by that name anymore. Her mother had changed it many times, but it had never worked, they had always been found. "...Violet"
He noticed the pause, and she started at him, pleading for him not to mention it.
"Delirious" They shook hands, then he helped her stand. Her legs felt shaky but stable enough. "You think you can walk?" She nodded tiredly.
"What's the plan?" Vanoss sighed. Cartoonz looked around bewildered.
"Well...the other group went that way right?" He gestured backwards, where they had come from. "So we should go onwards I guess?" he scratched his beard. Delirious turned to her,
"You comin'?" Go with them or stay alone on a weirdly deserted highway. Simple. She nodded, and they walked slowly, hoping to find some kind of salvation.
"Seriously though" Wildcat's frustration edging his voice. "Highway 90...Where the fuck are the cars?" He had a point, they had been walking for miles, following the road along the forest, the tree rustling, sharing secrets amongst themselves. The thought made her shiver. "Maybe the road's been cut off for some reason?"
"So why were we on it?" she pointed out. Vanoss started down at the road thoughtfully and just shrugged. A sign popped out from the trees. 'Five miles to Sturgis' Not too far, on the opposite side a sign pointed to Tilford, they must had crashed almost directly in the middle. "The other group should have made it to Tilford by now, they can sort out the coach mess. I just want to lay down" Wildcat sighed. "I want food" Delirious moaned.
"You always want food" Cartoonz jested. The mood picked up with a destination in sight, so did the wind. She pulled her arms into the sleeves of her oversized hoodie and cursed herself for the light summer dress she was wearing. It had been the only thing clean she had grabbed, there were some jeans in her backpack but they were probably burnt to a crisp. All she had were the things in her pocket, her wallet, her phone, and her mums lighter, an odd choice for a good luck charm, but her mother had never looked as happy as she did lighting up a cigarette with the silver zippo. It had been the first gift her father had given her, on their third date. Ed & Lizzy was engraved on the side and her mother would run her fingers across the inscription, a memory of better times.
They took the road into Sturgis, their steps getting lighter with each foot. "We should get your head checked out" Delirious frowned. She nodded, feeling anxiety in her stomach. She hated hospitals. Welcome to Sturgis, city of riders.
"Never mind the riders, where the fuck is everyone?!" Wildcat shouted as they walked into the deserted high street. "Did the apocalypse happen and no one told us?" Cartoonz joked, but you could hear the edge in his voice. They walked past peering into empty shops. "The fuck?" Vanoss hung his head in his hands, sitting on the sidewalk. She flopped onto a nearby bench and gazed bewildered up and down the road. "I don't understood" she whispered, mostly to herself. Maybe I am dead? Maybe we all are?
"What are you fools doing? Run!" The wind picked the words up almost before they were heard. Almost. She gazed up and saw an old woman peering through a half open window. "It's choosing day"
"Choosing what?" Wildcat shouted angrily.
"Just hide or you'll end up like the other fool kids"
"What kids? Hide from what? This is bullshit" Delirious' face contorted in anger.
"The kids at the bus station" Violet peered at Vanoss, watching his face pale as the woman slammed her window shut. "Fucks sake" Wildcat shouted. Curtains twitched around them but nothing else showed that this town was inhabited. "Guys..." Vanoss said, his face going green. "Weren't the others getting a connection from Sturgis to the campsite?" Delirious shook his head.
"No Ohm was picking them up"
"Where from though?" Vanoss' voice held an edge.
"No way" Cartoonz whispered. Covering his face with two large hands.
"Lady!" Delirious shouted, "Where's the station?" It seemed no one would reply, then a hand appeared, pointing towards the centre. The guys took off at a run, and with no other option Violet followed at a light jog, her head searing with every step.
The station was deserted, much like every other place. There was only one car in the lot, black and covered in dirt from back roads. "Please tell me that's not..."
"It is" Vanoss whispered. They were approaching the car as Violet finally caught up, watching from inside the bus terminal.
You got a fast car
It clearly hadn't been fast enough, she could see the blood splattered from the inside from where she stood, all the doors were open, and there were marks on the floor. Whoever the blood belonged to had been dragged somewhere, the trail suddenly ended a few feet away in another parking space. She listened to the cries of anguish, the moans of please...no, looked at the despair on the faces.
And shut her eyes to the flash backs, the pleading face with the big blue eyes and blonde hair streaked with blood, shaking hands as she tried to cut through the rope. She couldn't save her, not then, not now. She couldn't save herself. And as a hand clamped over her face, cloth covering her nose, its funny smell making her lightheaded, she couldn't save herself, or her new friends.
