The noise brought her out of her half snooze. Across from her Bryce stirred. "What is that?" He whispered. In the darkness the sound had the air of malice. She shrugged in the darkness watching Bryce carefully, the horizon had started to brighten and her legs ached from being curled up too close to her body. She stretched them out listening to the odd noise emit from the darkness in front of her.

BANG

The light blinded her and she blinked rapidly. Hurried footsteps approached them and she dahed over to Bryce, desperate to evacuate their area. A man burst into the small clearing where they had sat. He looked at Bryce, fer etched onto his face.

"Run"

" Ohm?" Bryce swayed slightly, his bloodloss making him weak and dizzy. Ohm put Bryce's arm over his shoulder and they half ran, half limped into the woods. Only seconds had passed since Ohm had turned on the light yet a heavy, shuffling run was heading their way. She followed the two men, leaping over roots and scrambling under fallen branches. The footsteps were getting closer but wiith Bryce they couldn't run any faster. The Ohm suddenly stopped, causing her to run into what had stopped him.

She felt blood trickle from the graze the bricks made. "What the-" Ohm whispered, terrified. Bryce looked up from the ground, his eyes glazed with pain. She had ran into the bricks, but in the middle stood a giant iron door, and beside it a lever. Desperate she pulled the heavy iron haandle down, but to no avail. Wires crossed the forest floor. "The generators" Ohm mumbled.
"What?" Ohm opened his mouth to answer when something burst from the trees, the early dawn light highlighting its garish features.

It's face was a mess of pale skin, staples and small, beady eyes that glinted black. The skin had been pulled tightly across the skull, stretching it into weird shapes.

The decision was simple. She couldn't carry Bryce, and he couldn't walk alone.  Stepping to the left of to two men she shouted. "Hey asshole. Come on then" The sticking out of her tounge was unnessary and childish but fuck it, sometimes you just gotta roll with it. Taking the bait the creature? (Who knew what iit was, it looked human in form but its face...) lumbered after her in a shuffling run, she glanced back once, long enough to see Ohm helping Bryce jog into the woods, then picked up the pace.

She had done cross country at school, the first one before the many moves, and she had been good at it. But that had always been in daylight, and hearing the Thing easily stretch its long legs over logs she had hurled over, she realised she was in his territory. After  couple of minute her lung began to burn. She was no longer in peak condition, the last few years had been spent doing a different kind of running. She slowed to scramble up a hill and screamed as agony erupted from her back, not pausing to look she forced herself up the embankment, feeling blood trickle down her back. She jogged on slowly, hobbling in pain, but refusing to stop. The blood had seeped down her legs and she knew she would be in trouble if she didn't rest.

Sharp teeth clamped around her leg and she was forced to stop, trying to pull apart the bear trap that caught her took her mind off the pain, but the Thing kept coming. He emerged from the trees like the devil itself, his walk was so slow she fouund her anger rise. "Cheating motherfucker! Take your time why don't you? I'll just sit here on my fucking ass!" The dawn was giving way to daylight and Bryce's hysterical words filled her mind. "Dead by Daylight huh?" She mumbled, ignoring the Thing she laid on the grass, looking up through the trees at the winter sun Violet smiled. There were worse ways to die, and she had done her job,  her atonement was close, she had saved Bryce and Ohm, for now at least. Their survival was in their own hands. Tired and delirious from pain she looked at the approaching fog. Maybe that would hide them?

Thud.

The Thing fell at her feet, twitching, it stared at her, until the weird misshapen skin folded over its eyes. The smell was back, the weird one from the bus station, it surrounded her, enveloped her in its warmth, and the fog swarmed her, knocking her out, forcing her to sleep and her body to rest.

For now.
