Big thanks to my friend ScarletMythical for helping me with this. She edited it for me, added her input, even made the cover and overall just was vital in helping me get this story out. I'm new to Wattpad and this is my first post so I hope you all enjoy! <3

C'mon. C'mon. I rummaged through yet another pile of scraps, cutting my fingers on stray metal sheets. The sun began to sink lower in the sky, with a orange and pink rim. Just give me something. I ran my hands through my light brown hair desperately. My eyes darted around the abandoned lot, landing themselves on an old, rusting Chevy Malibu. I trudged over to the slightly crushed car, roughly opening the door. The scent of decay filled my senses as I peered in. Hesitantly, I got on my hands and knees, crawling over the driver's seat. I opened the glove box which housed an expired candy bar and some old gum wrappers. My eyes widened at the sight of food, and I grasped for it immediately, greedily tearing open the wrapper and savoring it right then. And I swear, it hadn't felt that good to fill my stomach since the time Jack caught a fish after two nights of waiting by one of the huge lakes around here. I crumpled up the colorful foil and dropped it on the ground. I crawled into the back weakly, losing my grip on the back seat and plummeting awkwardly to the floor. My cheek pressed against something cold and fleshy. I slowly pushed myself up onto my elbow, wincing, not wanting to see what was under me. Inches from my nose lay petrified, striking blue eyes. Not another one... I closed my eyes tightly for a moment, not wanting to see the rest of the carnage. Ice, blue skin lay beneath my body, only covered with torn undergarments. The rotting corpse oozed white goop from several open wounds and patches of red and purple masked the parts of the skin which werent frozen solid. It looked as though they had been attacked by wolves and took shelter from them in the car. They must've died of hypothermia shortly after. My eyes darted to the bodies chest, where two straps were flung over its abdomen. Oh God, I huffed as I placed my hand on one of the body's arm, seeping in infection. I heaved the body up, opening the door and letting it plummet onto the dirt. I fumbled out of the car picking up the straps, exposing two sub-machine guns. I bit the inside of my mouth. This'll do. I smiled slightly as I cocked them and shot at the body. Works, I slung both guns on my shoulders. Two cases of ammo lay on the ground near the body, I grabbed them with my scabbing hands and started walking off towards home in the now dark sky.
Silver, frosted air wisped into my lungs as I inhaled, slowly taking in the sharp oxygen. The cool night sky was clear and gusts of wind blew snow into my puffy, red eyes. I dug my teeth sharply into my cracking bottom lip until blood gushed from it, flooding my body with the sweet sensation of pain. It felt good. Like unweighting the load of a long day and collapsing onto bed in cozy pajamas and tea. That kind of good.
The palms of my hands turned a bone white each time the harsh wind slapped me back into reality. I'm out in this wasteland for a reason. Not just some la-te-da trip to the gingerbread mans house. I need to get back to Jack.
I moved stiffly through the snow towards the cabin, my muscles tense and achy from the cold. Warm air puffing from my mouth with each breath. Smoke billowed from the messy stone chimney, so I know he was home. I strode widely onto the dark stained wood deck and gingerly opened the door, listening to the rhythmic creaking. The fumes of hard liquor filled me instantly and I smiled bitterly as the warmth of the cabin enveloped me, flushing my cool cheeks a shade of pink. "Welcome back," Jack said smoothly, without turning around. I stayed silent, dropping everything I was carrying and taking a seat on the patchy couch right next to him. I took the liberty of snatching his bottle of scotch from his hands and taking a long sip. The warm alcohol burned my insides as it flowed down my throat, making it raw and bloody. "Good, yeah?" Jack looked down at me with his clear, jade green eyes. I gazed up towards him, and nodded my head weakly. I took another gulp of the scotch before Jack's expression tightened.
"Were you able to get them?" His sly smile diminished and I could see his shoulders tense, his deep voice piercing the brief silence like bullets.
"Of course." My words were dried and nasally from not speaking. I struggled a bit to unzip my coat where I had stashed the two large guns, slung across each shoulder. I saw Jack's eyes widen as he took one of the guns from me. "I knew you would find something helpful out in that scrap yard but these," He let out an impressed whistle while running his large, strong hands over the sides of the gun. "Did you get your hands on some ammo?" I gestured toward where I dropped all my stuff, the two containers of rounds among it. I scooted closer to him, trying to stay warm. Suddenly there was a loud banging at the door. We both jumped and Jack instinctively reached for the gun, readying it by his side. Again, the door shuddered under the immense pounding. Jack approached the door steadily but before reaching for the handle he stared back at me. "If anything bad happens," he started. "Run."
