[CHAPTER 1]
It was only 7 a.m. and I had just woken up from a bad night's sleep. In the dimness of the room, i could make out the large cardboard boxes that were piled up on top of each other and that needed serious unpacking. I stared at my plain white ceiling, and wondered whether or not to get up. It had almost been two weeks since the day that we moved here, and my mom had been the first to unpack. She seemed to want to get it over with, but I just wasn't bothered; the only thing I had taken out of those silly boxes was my Stereo and my CD collection, the rest of my room was completely bare. It was a Sunday morning in August, and although it was early, the heat seemed to arrive pretty quickly. I decided to get up, and checked myself out in the mirror. My straight, long, dark brown hair was in a messy naught at the back of my head. With a lot of difficulty I brushed it out so that it was perfect again, and went to splash my face with freezing cold water. Boy, that woke me up!!
The first day of school was tomorrow, and I was going crazy with nervousity. I wasn't good at being the new girl, and I seemed to attract bad attention from everybody around me. I was afraid that no body would like me!
In order to drown those terrible and crazy thoughts from my mind, I put my earphones and blasted the Music at full volume. "American Idiot" by Green day always helped me forget about whatever i was worried about because of the full energy in the music. At 7:30 a.m. I was already wide awake and dancing around in the house. I stopped when I saw something moving towards me from the corner of my eye.
"Kayley honey, what are you doing up so early?" My mom looked like a walking zombie, as if she hasn't slept in days. I quickly pulled out my earphones and turned my attention towards my sleep walking mother.
"I can't sleep... I’m too nervous about tomorrow. I needed to give myself a boost of energy and excitement before the big, terrible and exhausting day that's a head of me." I seemed to always exaggerate everything that I did or said, and I wasn't about to stop now.
My mom just glared at me wondering what was wrong with me. "You are making it seem worse than it is... First days are always fun! It's the day you find new friends, and the day where you get the most attention! I used to love being the New Girl!" She tried to sound excited and enthusiastic but seemed to fail in the department of making-me-feel-better. "If you wanna be useful, while you are listening to your tunes, unpack your boxes! It's about time hon. If you wanna have everything for school tomorrow, you'd better get to it." She hadn't even finished saying what she wanted to say, when she turned around and headed back up the stairs and into her bed room, where I could hear the thump that she made when she threw herself back onto the bed.
My mom had a point, if I wanted to find all of my crap by tomorrow, I should get a move on. With Green day still blasting at full volume, I did an awkward boogie dance up the stairs and into my room. I casually took a box off of the very large pile on which it said, "Kayley's shit," in big bold letters. Those were the two words that were on each and every single box in the room and i was proud of it. I opened the box and took out everything that was inside of it, and looked through it all.
"That's where it went!" Since i couldn't hear myself speak because of the music, I had yelled that out way to loud, and immediately covered my mouth with my hand. I had found my sweater, the one that I had gotten from my best friend Brian, and decided to proudly put it on. I had known Brian since 8th Grade, and if I calculated properly, it had now been 4 years since we knew each other. Before I had moved, on the day of my 16th birthday, Brian had given me the sweater as a present. It had been his, but since i wore it all the time anyway, he said I could keep it in order to remind me of him. It was an awesome gift! I missed him like crazy! He was always the first person I'd go to, in any situation. He was too cool! But now we were hours away from each other, and all the girl advice i gave him, could only be done through a phone call or a stupid facebook message. Shaking the thoughts out of my head, I quickly resumed to cleaning up my stuff.
I neatly stacked my piles of books onto my bookshelf, and headed towards another full box. It had been about two hours since I had started unpacking, and I was surprisingly almost finished. I had one last box to empty, and then my room would be complete. It was almost 10 a.m. and just as I had expected, my little brother was awake. I knew this because of the loud and harsh movements coming from the upstairs floor. I could hear him running around his room, which unfortunately, was on top my mine. That was his daily routine: him getting up, running around and making my life a living hell.
"RYAN!!!! Please, just shut up!!!" I yelled, hoping that he would hear me through the thick ceiling. Again, as usual, i put my earphones in, and blasted "The Flood" by Take that. Music was my remedy. It seemed to relax me and help me out during any situation whether or not it was bad. it didn't take me long to finish... Honestly I missed my old room... Our house in Denver had been completely different. We lived in the middle of the city, and i was close to everything. My room was bigger than the one i had now, and there was more space for all of my furniture. This house on the other hand was spacious but had way to many corners, which made it super difficult to figure out where to put things. Seattle was awesome, but Denver had always been my home, and the place where I had left all of my friends. Jeez I missed them! We had had so much fun together, and now was obliged to find other people a blast with, and that was one thing i wasn't happy to have to do.
Just as I set the brand new laptop that I had gotten for my Sweet 16 onto my desk, when my brother came flying into my bedroom.
"Get out of here Ryan! Gosh, you are such a frikkin Pest sometimes!!!" He always did this. Rushing into my room, and annoying the hell out of me. He was such a prick, and my mom didn't even seem to notice. "Mom!!! Get the 'Thing' you call your son out of here! Please..." I honestly didn't need the stress right now. Ignoring my brother, I opened up my Macbook, and logged into my facebook account. Brian wasn't online, but that was okay, he was probably chasing after some girl, which meant that i could expect a call from him very soon for advice. He was too cool sometimes and really cute. No one was online because everyone was getting ready for their first day of school. But I knew they were thinking about me since I had gotten so many new wall posts from so many people.
My annoying brother was still in my room, running around making his bat man figure look like he were flying. He looked completely stupid, but i had to smile, i had to admit, it was cute! I stared at him for a while. I was caught off guard by my mom yelling thorugh the house.
"Kayley, could you come into the kitchen for a second please?" I got up not feeling bothered to do anything, and dragged my self towards my mom's favorite part of the house. She was baking, as usual, something very very sweet and fattening. Every sunday she baked us something, and every Sunday I gained about a pound. I looked with a worried expression on my face at the cake mix that she was preparing. My mom was a professional caterer, and knew it all when it came to food. "Sweety, I'm gonna need you to do me a huge favor. I really, really need more milk and flour for this recipe. Could you please, run over to the store and get some for me. There's 20 dollars in my wallet." I gave out a loud sigh, and walked away to get my mom's hand bag from which i retrieved the 20 bucks. I really didn't feel like doing anything today apart from lazing around in my newly furnished room which was being taken over by Ryan.
I casually ran out of the house and headed towards Wal-Mart. it was only about a block from where I lived, so I could easily just walk there.
It was in that supermarket, that I was blown away by one certain guy. The jerkiest man alive. It was there that I met Devon Brown...
