Chapter 5

I tapped my foot against the floor nervously, fiddling with my fingers as they lay in my lap.

Jane had made a recovery in the past eight hours and now had her head leaning against my shoulder as we waited to be called in. Flynn sat beside Jane, playing with a toy truck he had found, my dad and mum sat side by side talking in hushed voices, I could hear them though.

The door in front of me finally opened and a woman stuck her head out, her black frizzy hair falling in front of her eyes.

“Masons...” She called while tucking some strands of hair behind her ears, her eyes landing on Jane and me.

Inside the principal’s office was like stepping into a flower shop. It stunk of weed killer and flowers hung from the roof, vines tangled up the walls, wrapping onto anything.

“You all probably know why your here...” The principal started as she sunk into her chair, waving her hand, telling us to sit down.

“Jane and Flynn have these... odd yet extraordinary talents.” We all sat down, Jane trembling beside me. My father opened his mouth to say something but he was cut off by the principal, whose name was apparently Mrs McHenry. “I don’t really care if they can do things other children can’t... I don’t care if your entire family can, what I’m concerned about is them fitting in.”

“Mrs McHenry, I can assure you that our family is completely normal.” My mum lied looking completely calm as she sat there. “Mrs Mason, there is no use trying to lie to me, I’m a principal not the FBI.”

“So you’re okay with... this?” I asked, trying to think of the right word. Mrs McHenry’s eyes flashed to mine and I gulped feeling more nervous than before. She gave a small smile, “I’ve seen many weird things in my day Willow, this is probably the highest but there’s no reason for people to be afraid of what you can do.”

Mrs McHenry turned and looked back at my parents, “my main priority as principal is to make sure everyone is comfortable and to create a safe school environment. Jane’s math teacher spoke to me yesterday about Jane disintegrating a calculator. I’ll try my best to keep good care of Jane and Flynn but I can’t promise you that other teachers won’t start wondering what they can do.”

“Now I know you have to take Willow to school, but give the school a call if you are having any problems.” I grimaced, right, school.

“Hey, hey Willow! Willow! WILLOW!” I sighed before turning to face Danni, I liked Danni, of course, but sometimes she can be a bit... forceful. “You need your ears cleaned out or something.” She told me as she walked by my side, trying to keep up.

Danni stopped suddenly; I glanced over my shoulder and stared at her. Her mouth was hung open, her eyes wide, she was staring at something in the distance. I waved my hand in front of her face once I had reached her, she didn’t move.

“Why is Brent Gordon staring at you?” She questioned in a quiet voice as her grey eyes turned to me. “I-I don’t know... maybe he’s looking at you, are you sure he’s looking at me, he could be looking at someone behind us.” I was never the best at lying, not when you have a mum who can tell anyway.

To my relief, Danni smiled, “you are a horrible liar. He’s definitely looking at you...”

I turned my head slightly, looking out of the corner of my eye as Brent stood by the school steps, a girl stood next to him with choppy short blond hair that stuck out. She wasn’t saying or doing anything, just leaning against the school steps fiddling with a silver locket that hung around her neck.
