It was like breathing again
How was it possible to become complete -
Simply, by this one thing?
Home was soft and sweet,
The grass moving like velvet,
Tender rows of tall corn stalks
Rippled into a green sea.
Everything is tickled where the wind walks,
Golden tufts of tassels burst,
And my eyes glisten from the pull in my throat,
Nothing - mountains or deserts held the beauty of home,
Seeing great wonders merely made my heart float,
But only home made me sink deeper still,
The familiar, the loving landscape,
It was safe and beckoning.
There was no escape -
Candy blue skies sprouted cushions of white,
The horizon like snow-covered hills,
Covers of clouds cast shadows over bean fields.
The embalming yellow sun fills,
It wills me to stand still and inhale the pure air,
I do not blink for fear of it drifting away.
Such a heaven is way past rare,
I expect the rows of moving green to lash up like a wave,
They only dance and shake,
Sudden tears grip my eyes.
If I dream, let me never wake.
My heart knows it's home,
As silhouettes of silos and barns come into view,
Towering trees sway and diminish out of sight,
Long hills of windflowers overtaking them.
White, yellow, and purple petals pop in the light,
They run along the road,
Swirling, whirling, waiting for my touch,
Surely this much splendor was hand drawn by God.
Forever this image my mind will clutch.
