Erik’s POV

Fayt and I stopped at the same time.  She had just…

“What did you say?” Fayt asked out loud like an idiot.  He did not want Ameena to know that we knew she had spoken into our minds.  What did he take her for, a five year old?

She looked a little relieved that he did not ask her about the mind link. I focused in on her thoughts—exactly the reason why Fayt and I had started fighting, but, nonetheless—and I was surprised that she was unintentionally blocking me out… or her ‘inner self’ was.

“Nothing,” she said quietly, hardly above a whisper, but both me and Fayt could hear, “Can you two stop your fighting now?”

I watched her intently as she slowly took a bite of her pretzel.  I noticed that her hands were shaking slightly.  Calm down, I suggested into her head so softly it would probably sound like a stray thought in her head.  She visibly relaxed, and I smiled slightly.  We went back to the table to sit down and watch her eat in silence.

By the end of the day, I could rip someone’s head off.  I felt the questions swirling through her mind.  I waited by her locker as I listened in on her conversation with Fayt—they had bumped into each other in the hall around the corner.  Funny thing was, Fayt did not know I was there.

“Fayt, can you please tell me what’s going on?” Ameena asked.

“I don’t know what you are talking about,” he replied.

I sensed her frustration at his lie. “You’re lying to me!”

“Ameena, you should go home and get some rest.”

“I’m not delusional, Fayt!  And until you admit that there is something going on here, I’m not going to speak to you!”

She stormed around the corner, and I pretended that I just got there.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, even though I already knew.

“Are you going to tell me I’m imagining things, too?” she snapped.

I feigned hurt, “That hurts, love.  And no, I will do no such thing.”

She smiled a little at my voice. “Thank you for lightening my mood, but what exactly are you doing at my locker?”

I sighed, ‘You forgot your promise already?’ while I pulled out my car keys.

She gave me a look.  “You drive; I ask questions.  Deal?”

“Deal,” I agreed, knowing how much it would piss off Fayt once he found out about it—like I actually gave a bloody damn how angry my ‘comrade’ would be.
