Chapter 2
"No! No! No!" Hayley screamed. "It's okay Hayley! I will be in the square waiting for you! When you come home Annie has some delicious food for all of us to eat." Mom said and kissed the top of her head. Our mother hugged us and gave us kisses as we left. In about 15 minutes all of the family's of the children and others can gather around the square to watch the reaping to bid and see what kid will be picked this year to be put in that arena and be killed. I grabbed Hayley's hand as we walked to the square as dozens of kids our age walked around us. Hayley kept a straight gloomy face as I did too. The square was divided into 2 big sections which the boys were in one and the girls were in the other. Than the girls were separated by ages and the same with the boys. Since my friend Luke is the same age as me I looked to the boys side and we made eye contact. We both mouthed to each other "be safe". So since he districts are so poor you can put your name in the glass bowl more than once in exchange for food. So my name is in it 20 times in exchange for grain and oil. I wasn't going to allow Hayley's name to go in more than once.
Luke has a whole family to feed so his name must be in it more than 50 times. So now the reaping has begun. Perky, happy, and selfish Effie Trinket is standing on the stage. She is the announcer for district 12. Which means each year she picks the names of the tributes for district 12. So there are 2 huge glass bowls with gently folded up small pieces of paper with kids names to be the tributes. "Welcome! Welcome! To the 74th annual hunger games! May the odds be ever in your favor!" Effie trinket says in a perky voice. "May the odds be ever in your favor" means that hopefully you have a fair chance as everyone else to not be killed. When everyone has different odds of being picked, it isn't fair at all. I probably have a bigger chance than a lot of the other girls here of being picked. But I am scared for Luke. He hasn't been picked once yet, and he has had his name in that bowl more than any boy in district 12. So it gives me hope, that I won't be picked, neither will Hayley. "So let's begin! Ladies first!" Effie says.
Effie puts her hand down into the large glass bowl filled with girl names. She pulled one out. My heart pounds so I can hear it in my ears "please don't be me. please don't be me" I whisper to myself. She calls it out. "And the tribute is, Hayley Noelle Leblanc!" Effie says unexpectedly. It is my little sister, Hayley Noelle Leblanc.
