Chapter 1

I woke up at the sound of something very loud blaring into my ears.

Don't stop believin'
Hold on to that feelin'
Streetlights, people
Don't stop believin-

I slammed my hand down on my alarm. As much as I loved that song, I needed my beauty sleep.

Hold on to that feelin'
Streetlights, people

It faded off, and I sighed in relief. My eyes scrunched up as I heard a familiar tune, trying to recognize it.

Oh whoa

Oh whoa

Oh whoa

You know you love me, I know you care
Just shout whenever and I'll be there
You are my love, you are my heart
And we will never ever ever be apart
Are we an item? Girl quit playing
We're just friends, what are you saying?

You just got friend zoned! I thought. Once I recognize what song this is, though, I'm turning it off.

Said "There's another," and looked right into my eyes
My first love broke my heart for the first time and I was like

Baby, baby, baby oh
Like baby, baby, baby no
Like baby, baby, baby no oh
Thought you'd always be mine, mine

I screamed into my pillow, fully awake now. I pressed buttons on my alarm clock desperately as I tried to turn the song off. Nothing was working, and I finally cracked an eye open. My phone was right next to my pillow, blaring this horrid song. I was about to furiously turn off the song, but I had a better idea. I got out of my bed quietly and put my ear to the door. I heard muffled fits of laughter as my brother was probably trying to keep quiet. I slowly turned the doorknob and swung the door open, grabbing my brother and pushing him into my room. I tried to keep the door from opening but of course, my older brother easily opened the door and burst into laughter.

"Ohh man, oh my gosh, ahh..." Aiden sobered up and glanced at my angry face, before bursting into laughter again.

I turned my back away from him and threw my foot backwards, kicking him in the thigh.

"Ow, ow, okay..." He rubbed the spot where I hit him, and I had the urge to kick him again.

"That was stupid," I commented. "Of course I would know it was you; you should've known that I would come out and catch you acting like an idiot in the hallway."

The Justin Bieber song was still blaring from my phone, so I turned it off and sighed with relief. I turned around and he was gone, probably escaping downstairs before I could attack him with rage. I groaned and got ready for school: getting dressed, brushing my teeth, and taking a quick shower. My door mysteriously opened and I grabbed a flip-flop under my bed, ready to whack the intruder on the head. What? I always had to be prepared; I even had scissors under the bed... they're more dangerous than they sound!

I sighed in relief when the intruder was just Charles, our cat. She is a girl and definitely loves me the most out of my family.

I hurried downstairs, glaring at Aiden and accepting a bowl of cereal and milk from Mom. I sat across from him, ignoring him as I devoured my food.

"Hey, Avaline, how did you like your alarm?"

No reply.

"Avaline, why are you so grumpy?"

No reply.

"Yesterday I saw one of your friends and kidnapped them."

No reply.
