Stuck in an Impasse

Chapter 1

"How much did he get?"

The girl insisted impatiently.

"How much did he.."

She was cut off mid sentence. Covering her anxious daughter's mouth with the left hand while holding the receiver in her right, Mrs. Matt made the final greetings and then ended the call.

"Where are your manners Whitney? I can only answer your questions after I hang up!!"

"Please! Tell me his marks!"
The girl demanded, as if her mother wasn't even scolding her.

"261"

Mrs. Matt answered.

And the girl screamed.

She had finally beaten him in something. She had scored 265 in the entrance exam of the same university. And her cousin was 4 marks behind.

She had won! And she was excited. Her life for her was as perfect as she could have dreamed of.

"Yaaaaaaay!!!! I did it! I did it!"

She jumped up and down like a little girl with joy.

"Ssshh... Be quiet Whitney! He is upset and you are laughing. What is wrong with you?!"

Mrs. Matt scolded her again.

"Oh come on Mum! He is going to get into that university anyways. But I passed him! For once I won Mum!!"

And as she said it, her eyes twinkled in delight. Even Mrs. Matt couldnt resist joining in her happiness. Her daughter was happy and so was she.

Her little girl was now 17 and big enough that she was about to go live alone in a different city. She was going to a university. She still couldn't make herself believe that her child was now leaving her home.

University was a big deal!

And in this family she was the first girl ever to be going to a university.

Yeah first!

No girl in that family ever had more education than eighth standard. Except for her mother who had completed her FA privately.

"Come here Whitney!!" Mr. Matt said coming into the room and giving her a bear hug. "I am so proud of you today."

"Baba! I scored the highest!!"

Whitney squealed at the same time as Mrs Matt started to say,

"Ofcourse we are! Quinn and Ian! Why cant you both be more like your sister? Look how happy she made us today. You both can try and do that, you know..."

And like always Mrs. Matt started to advise her sons about studying and improving their grades. While the boys sat playing their games, totally ignorant of anything happening around them whatsoever.

Here's a brief intro to my characters:

Whitney- a 17 year old, 5'1" chubby burnette with wheatish skin, curly hair and small hands. Just ended her high school and going to a university for a degree in Electrical Engineering.

Mr. Matt- an Electrical Engineer working in a power station in a small town. He is 5'2" old man with dark brown skin that has just started to show his lines and wrinkles due to 53 years of hardwork. He has a daughter Whitney and two sons Quinn and Ian.

Mrs. Matt- a 5'2" curvy lady in her mid forties with baby pink sensitive skin with hardly any signs of age but grey hair. A house wife!

Quinn- a 15 years old, 5'9" boy. Whitney's brother.

Ian- a 12 year old, Whitney's younger brother.
