Normally, once my parents leave the house, I'm supposed to be studying some sort of academic material. But since today is a Saturday, I'm giving myself a break. So after Elliot and I finished cleaning up breakfast, we decided to head into town.
The heart of our small Maine town is only a mere five minutes walk from our apartment building on the water. Most of the people who live here are either older families who have been here for as long as they can remember or young families trying to find a place to settle down. Our situation is the latter as far as I know. I've never met my grandparents and my parents try as hard as they can to avoid any conversations involving their lineage. For all I know, the entirety of my extended family could be apart of a mob or run a cupcake empire. From what I can tell, my parents ran away from their families when they were both relatively young. From my father's slight British accent I'd wager he's from Europe. As for my mother, I'm at a complete loss. She shares the same manner of speaking as most of the natives, but no one from around here has known her or her family from before she moved here with my father.
Speaking of my parents, they're both in law enforcement. My father is a detective at the local police department which deals mostly with small things like break-ins and the occasional DUI. My mother works as a prosecutor in a city that's about a half-hour's drive away from residence. She generally deals prosecutes the offenders in the cases my father investigates. They're quite the crime fighting duo if you ask me.
As I finish packing my bag with supplies for going in town, my brother knocks on my door.
"Syl, you ready to go yet?"
"Almost El, just give me five more minutes."
"I have you five more minutes, five minutes ago. Now get your bag and let's get out of here"
"El, do you realise how much you sound like Mom sometimes?"
"Yeah, I do. And what is your point exactly?"
"That you can be a total killjoy sometimes," I say as I open my door. "Now let's blow this popstand!"
"Syl, you sound like Dad."
"Yes, and?"
"And nothing. Now let's go before the traffic gets too bad."
"What traffic? We live in the middle of nowhere!" And with that, Elliot and I set out on our quest in search of something to do in this boring little town.
