The phone rang long after Scott fell asleep, leaving Riley with Crazy In Love playing constantly throughout the night. Eventually she got up, kissing Scott's tear stained cheek and grabbed the phone.
"Hello?"
"Mitchell, it is two in the morning. What on earth are you doing calling Scott at this hour?" Riley's tired voice was just above a scolding whisper.
"Who is this? Is Scott there?"
"This is Riley, Riley," surname, what's was your surname? "Riley Carrol. I've been staying with Scott since you left, just helping around the house. Once again I will preface that Scott is here. He's in bed, sleeping. Like most people do at two in the morning."
"Well ask him when the next time I'm allowed to see Brady is. Alex wanted to meet him."
"Alex? Who's Alex?"
"My new boyfriend. He's like, great. Tell Scott he's so much better in bed then him, too. Much less gen- Allie! I'm trying to talk to a housemaid. Give me a minute."
"No, you can tell your fuck buddy that he will not be meeting Brady anytime soon. I'll tell you this, mister heartless, if you think that you can make a man who is so in love with you want to do nothing but cry for weeks, you don't deserve to see his son. If I told him that this Alex motherfucker was better in bed then him, if I told him that you said the most terrible things about him, he'd still let you see Brady. But I'm a bit more than a housemaid, Mitchell. I'm a mother, and I know when to put my god damn foot down."
"Hey, he's my son too!"
"Yeah, and he doesn't deserve a father who's this cruel to other people."
"You don't understand. Scott took Brady away from me, he wanted an abortion before. He didn't even want Brady! He was the only one I had and then he took him away from me!"
"You still don't get it, do you?"
"What's there to get?"
"He took Brady from you because he wanted you to feel the pain that he did when you left him. Stop playing the victim card when neither one of you are hurt more than the other. Neither one of you is more to blame, you both took away each other's loved ones. Don't act like he wasn't effected, because the only thing he says anymore is how sorry he is. He keeps saying that you're happy, so why can't he get over it? He's blaming himself and he's hurt. Scott apologized to you and let you see your kid when he didn't have to, so why can't you step up to do the same?"
"You don't get it! H-he... He... He hurt me so badly. He didn't lose someone he loved as much as I love Brady."
"If you can't get that Scott loves you more than anyone else in the world, I'm afraid this conversation is over. I'll drop the message by Scott, don't be surprised if Brady is at your door tomorrow," she hung up, looking back over at the bed to see Scott sitting up.
Riley put her hand on his cheek, pulling his face towards her chest. He hugged her tightly, crying gently into her tank top.
"Ask him for his address," Scott pulled his face from the tear soaked fabric, "I'll let this Alex guy meet him, maybe he'll be the dad I couldn't be."
"You need to stop talking like that, Scott," Riley's gaze was firm, turning on the lamp before sitting down on the bed, "you are a good dad."
"Then why did I take that kid away from his father?"
"You and I both know it was because of how Mitch leaving you effected you. It hurt you and you wanted him to feel that."
"He still hasn't felt it, you know. I never mattered nearly as much as our son did to him. Before that, even, he probably didn't even care that much. He got over me so quickly but he still wants me to suffer for what I did to him. I-I know I was wrong, I just want this to end. I'll give him Brady, I'll work out the custody. I just can't do this anymore," Scott hiccuped.
