A.N - I would like you all to keep in mind that the story works in a flashback sort of manner. This means that at some parts Lady is remembering what happened while other times she is in the present with Jake. Other than that enjoy chapter 1.

I walk down the slope of the mountain, trailing behind Jake, pistol in hand. The routine we have sticks throughout the walk down. We cross the small rocks at the mouth of the cave, heading downwards, swatting through the thick brushes of leaves that do a good job at hiding our somewhat of a home. Then the small bushes and plants start turning into giant leaves and trees the sizes of cars. The ground beneath out feet turns from crunchy to mossy and humid, and lizards and small insects scurry over our feet.We keep descending downwards until we reach Billy, the biggest tree at the base of the mountain, named that way because he reminds us of our friend that was broad just like it. We climb up until using the intertwining vein like trunk of the tree as leverage and start climbing up to the thin branches.
It's never a good idea to rest on the ground.
Once I sit Jake hands me the binoculars.
They're dirty and the rust around the edges of the lenses is getting darker. I'm surprised they've lasted this long they might have fallen or we might have forgotten about them. Even with Jake taking such good care of everything things tend to grow old after almost 3 years.I take the binoculars from his hands and move my gaze to the right to see the old military base down by the brachiosaurus lake. It is relatively small if you compare it to the bases back on Earth. It's made up of a rectangular building. Surrounding it are about a dozen tents still standing, some however are limp or fallen on the floor and a broken fence surrounding the area. After all our exploring of this base we've never known what exactly happened to those living there. Maybe it was one of the first expeditions of this planet, back before we were sent here on our mission.
"Seems like the rex is heading away" I say handing back the binoculars.
"Yeah but it still sounded close we better be careful " Jake mutters.
I think back to that first encounter, back when we hadn't found the cave with the tyrannosaurus that almost ate me. I speak before I start down memory lane.it is never good. I move my eyes to the lake where there are dozens of gigantic animals are gazing quietly some eating, some drinking."The brachi don't seem worried. Look at them they're like sheep in a grass field"
Jake shakes his head "You know that sometimes the rex only goes far away enough to trick them. "
"Lucky us, we get to be in more danger"
Jame shakes his head once again, a ghost of a smirk on his face "Come on we've got to get to the base before noon." He start his descent down the tree and I follow suit.
* * *
Once we near the base I start seeing the small almost indescribable marks on the tree that lead to our other hideouts. We haven't used them in quite a while but its safer to have them. As much of a home our cave may be it doesn't mean it'll be that way forever. Besides, its good to know there are other alternatives.
We take our usual route, crossing the fence we climb through a window that leads into a dusty room that used to be an old engineering closet. Lucky for us it can be locked from the inside.
We stay silent, listening for any ominous crawling or screeching but the only sounds heard are the buzzing from the insects and the howling from the nearby brachiosaurus.
