Flawless

Chapter One: Gamma

"Rose Peony Wynter,"  a lab assistant's boss smiled brightly.  "Come to check up on us so soon?"  

Rose held up her chin.  "Might I ask why you would say such an uncomical comment on something I do everyday."

"Oh Rose, your such a party pooper."  he teased.  Spinning around on his heals he looked at his assistant.  "Roger that doc?  Let's get this place running!"

"Yes sir!"  the red-haired lab assistant switched on the power to all the devices in the room.  

"I want to ask how the lab was going, Duke"  Rose patiently requested.  

"Why, of course anything for you m'lady.  DOC!"  he yelled, popping a toothpick in his mouth.  

"Yes sir?"  

"How was the micro-micro scope doing?"  

Rose looked at Professor Duke.  "Micro-micro scope?"  

   Duke shrugged.  "I couldn't think of a creative name for it."  The lab assistant ran out of the white, organized room and brought back a large spherical glass ball.  

Rose raised an eye brow.  "You're kidding, that's it?  What a sentimental waist of my time."  

"Darling, that's only the lense!"  Duke licked his lips, mocking Rose's British accent .  "BRING THE SCOPE DOC!" he screeched.    

"Yes sir!" the assistant ran out again and brought back a giant, white, conical tube that he strapped on the glass ball.  Duke walked over and pulled the tube to eye level.  

"Take a look."  Duke said.  Rose, still displeased, looked inside the tube.  She jumped back.  

"What is that?"  she squawked.  Inside the tube was a purple blob of who knows what.  "Looks like a micro organism!"  

"Ding ding ding,"  Duke shouted.  "It's a micro organism's intestines."  

"AW!"  Rose gagged.  "I think I've seen enough thank you Mr. Duke, thank you."

Rose was just about to rush out the door when...  

"Wait, Rose!"  Duke yelled.  "One more teensy weensy little thing!"  

Rose sighed.  "What?"  

"I've picked up something new."  

Rose let go of the door handle.  "I'm listening."  

"I've recently discovered something about astronomy.  Strange rays have been interrupting our studies.  We've been finding Gamma like rays coming from a distant planet!"

Rose turned around.  "If this is a trick about that missing astronaut Sage Thyme-"  

"No, no, no!  This is about alien life forms."  

Rose cringed at the sound of the word alien.  It always made her feel uncomfortable thinking that  if there were other life forms, we were insulting them by calling them aliens.  Maybe they thought of humans as the aliens, the superior creatures.  

"Can you decipher it?"  Rose asked.  Duke twitched at the sound of decipher.  An insanely wild look passed over his face before he laughed forcefully.     

"You think I've tried!  I've been up all night-"  he stopped as his face melted into a concerned look.  "Wait a minute."  His brow creased.  

The assistant bit his lip.  "You should leave now Ms. Rose, come back tomorrow."  

Rose saluted.  "It's my duty any way to come back here every morning everywhere anyway Duke, Farewells."  

"Bye!"  

Rose slipped out the door hearing insane celebrating inside the lab.  Rose exhaled her surplus of inhalation she had been holding.  How did these aliens look like?  Where the  coming to earth?  

Rose shook the feeling off and continued marching down the halls.  I'll forget about it tomorrow...

At night she kept thinking about it.  She needed to see what was happening in there!

Duke whistled as he tweaked and turned the screw driver in his hand.  "What's up doc?"  

"Oh, nuthing."  

"Hows the battery go'in?"  

Duke's assistant replied, "Everything going according to plan."  

Duke stopped whistling.  "That's a relief."  he let out a short laugh.  "Wass up Jupiter?  Ain't work'in with you juss so you can help out!  I'm bored in this ole' lab.  Anything new?  Hey wass up with Karry aye hot shot?  Ayyyyyye?"  Duke elbowed his assistant.  

"First of all my name is Juniper,"  Juniper responded.  "And second of all, Karry moved."  

"Awwwww, that's a shame."  Duke held up a tiny radio-like cube.  "JUPITER!  Uh, I mean JUPIE!  BATTERY!"  He frantically grabbed at the battery.  Juniper threw it in his hand.  "IT'S COMPLETE!  HA!"  Duke snacked the on switch!  "DECIPHER MY ENSLAVED TECHNOLOGY!"  

Juniper rested his cheek against his knuckles.  "Great,"  he said sarcastically.  

"4.5 BILLION!!!  4.5 BILLION MILES AWAY!"  Duke flopped on the floor.  his arms shot up above his head.  "WOOOOO HOOOOO!!!"  

The door to the lab smashed open.  Rose Wynter stood at the door with a crazed look in her grey eyes.  She was wearing a pink bathrobe and her red curly hair was tied in a pony tail.  "Duke?"  she gasped.  "Explain."  

"I DID IT!"  he shot up on his feet.  "I AM THE CIPHER NOW ALIEN! HA HAAAA!"  

Rose raised an eye brow.  "Wow, you're crazy."

Duke walked up to her grinning, sweat beads on his brow.  "Don't tell me twice!"  he panted heavily.
