❤ Quick Note: if you haven't read the short story Dreams Are Forever (which is the story before this one) I'd definitely recommend reading the short six chapters, as it will give you a background on Shelby and help you to be able to understand the story better! ❤

"Harley! Come on," my mum shouted, whilst translating it in sign language for me to also understand. I let out a silent giggle as I shook my head at the little ball of fluff who was burying herself in the long grass. She came sprinting back when she heard my mother call, running as fast as she could towards us as if we were going to leave her. She ran and jumped onto my lap, before reaching up and giving me a sloppy kiss on the cheek. I shook her off my face and laughed. She's a little terror, but a bundle of joy.

I watched my mum closely as we took the short walk back home. Her back slouched over more than it normally did, her fingers ridged and her eyes duller than normal. I felt as though she was letting out soft whimpers of pain, although I couldn't tell. I was going to ask if she was alright, but I know she doesn't like being confronted about it, and I had to use my hands to keep Harley from falling off my knee whilst we rode over the bumpy pavement.

When reaching our bungalow I let Harley jump down and pulled open the door for mum. "Hey girls, did the three of you have a nice walk?" Bradley signed, turning around from the stove.

"It was a nice walk, but I'm very tired," my mum signed, before going out of the kitchen.

I knitted my eyebrows together with concern and Bradley had the same expression. "Is she alright?" he signed, before turning around to quickly mix whatever was in the pot.

"As alright as she can be, I suppose," I replied, slumping my hands onto my lap.

Harley came running over, thinking I was patting my knee to invite her up for a cuddle. She stood back a little, bent her tiny little legs and then gave an almighty jump. She always cheered me up these days. Her cute black curls flying in all different directions as she sped through the air before landing on my knee. We fell in love with her the second we saw her, we went to the pet store to buy a Labrador but came back with a Shihtzu, which I still to this day find pretty funny.

"What are you cooking?" I signed to Bradley. Looking up I realised he had turned the other way to turn the stove off. I banged on the kitchen surface using my whole hand, I had no idea what sound it made or how loud it was, but it sure got his attention! I repeated myself and giggled at his shocked expression.

"I'm making a casserole, your mums favourite," he gave a sad smile and then turned back to the pot.

I left the kitchen, deciding to go and check on mum, with Harley still snuggled up on my knee. I gently pushed open the door, reaching over to grab the door handle before kicked it and gave her a fright. She laid still on the king size bed in the room, curled up in a ball with her back towards me. I wanted to tell her everything would be okay, to see her beautiful smile and her eyes light up, but I know it is unfair to make promises which are out of your control. My eyes stared at Bradley's nightgown which was draped across one side of the bed, as I daydreamed for what felt like hours.

I slowly reversed and then clicked the bedroom door shut. Going slowly down the corridor to my own bedroom, in attempt to not disturb my mum by skidding along the varnished wooden floor. When entering my bedroom Harley quickly scurried off my knee, I sucked in a breath as I waited for her to move out of the way. I always worry she'll jump down without me noticing and then I'll run her over with my big wheels. She's so tiny she's sometimes hard to spot, but mum and Bradley always know where she is, I bet she's a yappy little pup.

I move over to the picture board beside my bed, my eyes fixing on the picture of my college graduation, my favourite picture. It has the three of us in, capturing such big smiles. I was just eighteen, in my big puffy purple dress feeling like I was on top of the world. Bradley has his arms around my mum and the happiness is pouring out of her through her open mouthed grin. It was the day they broke the news to me that they wanted the three of us to move houses. I was ecstatic at the thought; we were all going to be living together. I knew Bradley was going to move in with us sooner or later, and I was happier for my mum, she'd finally moved on with her life instead of pondering over my needs. I presumed we were going to be moving a few streets away, I didn't think they meant moving cities.

I was devastated at first I loved living in Tamper, my childhood was here and so were my friends. My mum used the persuasion technique of 'Kissimmee is so much closer to Disneyworld!' knowing I was still adamant on my dream of working at Disneyworld some day. I agreed to the idea, for my mother's sake.

I thought it would have been months, maybe years before it actually went ahead, but they had already found a house and were ready to sign to paperwork as soon as they checked I was onboard. The new bungalow was definitely a lot more convenient for the three of us, we all had our own space and it was astonishingly beautiful.

I was suddenly knocked out of my train of thoughts when Bradley tapped me on the shoulder, unaware anyone was in my room I turned around in fright. "Dinners ready," he signed, giving a crooked smile.

I positioned myself at my space at the table, opposite my mum. I went to thank Bradley for the dinner, but my mum caught my attention first. Her pale face was filled with red streaky lines, clearly from tears. Her hand shook as she hovered her fork over the bowl. A lump in my throat formed, and immediately wished I could trade places with her. She doesn't deserve this, not after everything she has been through already.
