"Another one, please," I requested, placing the empty shot glass on the vibrant red countertop.

"Sure thing, little lady," the bartender responded, reaching for a bottle of Jack.

While he filled my glass, I surveyed the room, a collection of inebriated fools, and caught sight of my brother making out with some woman. It was messy and unpleasant to watch. Currently, we're in a bustling downtown bar, celebrating my brother's incredible promotion at the hospital. While he's the life of the party, I'm quietly getting drunk in a corner—not exactly a social butterfly.

"Here you go," said the bartender with a smile, setting the glass down.

"Thank you."

I took the shot, downing it as smoothly as the first few. Pulling out my phone, I checked the time and saw it was nearly 1:30 in the morning. I needed to head home for some sleep if I was to make it to work later today, and sober, no less.

"Hey, could I close out my tab, please?"

"Y/n, are you going to make it home like that?" my brother inquired as we stumbled out of the bar together.

"Yeah, I'm about to call us a taxi, dummy," I replied.

"No, I'm fine, I'm heading home with her," he declared, nodding towards the girl he had been kissing earlier.

"Ew, just be safe, okay? And I mean, use protection," I teased.

"Hey, you're my little sister; I should be the one telling you that, you hermit," he retorted with a sarcastic huff, then burst into laughter, ruffling my hair before he staggered off.

I let out a soft chuckle before taking out my phone to call a taxi.

"Where to, miss?" the driver inquired as I settled into the back of the cab.

"(Your Address), please," I replied.

The driver eased off the curb and made a left at the stop sign.

I took out my phone and began browsing through various social media platforms to pass the time. I chuckled upon seeing my brother's inebriated post on his timeline, knowing he would regret it once he sobered up.

As we neared a red light at an intersection, the cab decelerated. A minute later, as the light switched to green, the cab resumed its journey. Abruptly, intense headlights pierced the cab's darkness, and I glanced up just in time to see a truck that had ignored the red light hurtling toward my side of the taxi.

The dreadful symphony of bending metal and breaking glass engulfed me. Pain surged through me, bones snapped, and then, darkness ensued.
